Hey everyone,

I just wanted to get a thread started for all of the BHC/MVC students; please help me get a support system going here. I am starting at BHC in Jan. 07 and would love to make contact with the other new students. It would also be great if the current students would join in too, maybe share some advise;) /horror stories.:uhoh21: I'm sure that you current students have a lot to say.

El Centro/Northlake has a couple of really good threads going, but it would sure be great to talk with those I will be going to school with too.

Good Luck to everyone!

Josh, I don't know you, but congrats on the job and good luck with the NCLEX :)

Would anyone care to answer more questions from a newbie?

*How in the world do you carry all of the books, the supplies for lab, etc? Does everyone have one of those rolly things?

*How do you carry your stethoscope? We've all been using the boxes they came in, but is there a better way?

*Our 1st lab check off is Friday (peri/apical pulse)...any words of wisdom or hints on what to expect? How are the "patients" picked? I'm sure after we make it past the 1st one I'll feel more comfortable on how it all works.

Thanks!

Hey!

For 1st semester we all had the rolling backpacks and they were helpful. After that I could get by without it as there were not as many books in 2nd and 3rd semester, either that or I just decided I didn't need them all with me at class. :) At first I just kept the stethascope in the box, but then I would just leave it floating in my skills or clinical bag, and it never got hurt. They are pretty tough.

Good luck on your 1st check off! For check offs like that they will pair you with whoever is next to you in chronological check off order. Everyone draws numbers, and like 1 and 2 are together, 3 and 4 and so on. You each take turns checking off and being the patient. If you go later and have time, try to locate the apical pulse on your partner, as on some people it's harder to find, and you have a limited amount of time to be searching around! I failed the apical part of that check off for that reason. At least I only had to redo the apical part, and not the peripheral part. Everyone fails check off eventually, so if you do relax and just try again, although that was a pretty easy check off. Practice alot and I'm sure you'll do well. :)

i totally agree with kaley! just relax! i had a difficult time doing that during my check offs and that is what got the best of me. i didn't fail too many of them but when i did, it was nerves! don't get psyched out, try to go first if you can (trade numbers), get it over with so you don't have to sit there getting worked up. relax, relax, relax! like kaley said...everyone fails a check-off eventually, some fail the first time everytime, but that doesn't mean you won't pass the course, everyone of us failed checkoffs and everyone of us passed the course. practice, practice, practice! even if it is by yourself in your living room! the more you go thru it you will get it. it is the repetion. we also got together at the public library if the lab was closed, or at each others houses. get creative! if you need a practice buddy...call me...i can always use the practice! oh, and don't forget to breath!

Yes I gave in during second semester and started using a rolling back pack. But what I use is really a scrap booking tote on wheels. It has more dividers in it and places for all of my pens also had more room than the traditional rolling backpack. I got mine at Tuesday morning and you can get different ones at MJdesigns with a coupon so it is not very expensive. Good luck on your check offs tomorrow. Just relax and you will do great.

where's all our newbies?:w00t:

all us newbies are completely overwhelmed with the 1st 3 weeks of material ;)

please tell me it's normal to feel on top of the world one day and completely overwhelmed the next...our first lecture exam is on Monday and I don't even know where to start. I have completed the lectures objectives for the chapters indicated, completed the study guide, read the book, watched the videos and yet I feel unprepared.

Words of encouragement needed-PLEASE!

normal???? yes, welcome to your new world for the next 15 months. if you have done all that you have listed...you should be just fine. words of encouragement...do the meds pub questions over and over, study like a dog now, and then don't look at it on monday. eat a good breakfast, relax, and take ear plugs to the testing center (they help a lot!) oh, and don't read to much into the questions, listen to your gut. most questions that were missed were becuz we changed our answers. you sound like you are really prepared, just do as many practice questions as you can.

good luck and be strong!:pumpiron:
