Broken RN License

Published

I have been an RN for 15 years licensed in 4 states, been in TX last 4 years. I was dishonest during covid and could not find a hands on BLS. The nursing board was alerted and I was given a warning with stipulations. Since then I have had my car repossessed evicted and lost almost everything due to finding a job. The stipulation is for 12 64 hours a month reporting of working in a hospital but I can not find a hospital nor emergency care that will hire me. Please I need guidance should I just give up change careers? Thank you

I admit I am humbled and I have never had a blemish until 2020.

thank you so much for your help.

*****ANYWHERE YOU INTERVIEW, the key is to be up front w/your issue immediately AFTER your interview. like before you say goodbye, whej they ask you if you have any questionsx, tell them your situation and be honest and transparent about your license status and why it is the way it is. most hiring managers will appreciate that and give you a chance instead of finding out thru NURSYS.  Its not like you commited a felony or something. don't surrender your license, you still have options out there I PROMISE YOU!!

I can't please understand I'm not the victim and every time I write one of these I feel like I'm crying like a victim that is not my intention my mindset nor what I want to say so I am distorting it anyway let me know how I can fix that because I want to stand accountable for the situation and and overcome !!

You're very right it took me a couple tries, and I had to identify some of my areas of where I went wrong but interviews key ! it was the first part of getting hired I looked at it's all delivery and I've been told by several managers that they appreciate my integrity and I respect that  . that first impression upfront integrity honesty means a lot to a hiring manager. What do you need?. I've been on maybe 30 interviews and I've tried bringing it up at the beginning bring it up with the recruiter first introducing it during the interview. I played the scenario out with about 12 managers. I even followed up with the managers, not getting any returned advice on how to better myself after the interview of why I was not chosen for the position and nobody ever returned my call from Baptist Methodist Christus, and university. I've visited one of the hospitals local level one trauma center/teaching facility you know I requested to speak to one of the ICU managers. I went up there and laid everything out on the table was complete completely myself as always, very transparent and humble always genuine humble approach because that's really what this is taught me if I had to find a positive. I humbly and professionally request the ICU manager to have a conversation with me and interview short or we can reschedule. I need a job and then I never heard back.

for what it's worth a challenge any nurse to tell me that they have not ever been told to lie on a daily basis, especially on their documentation. Now the way that is described it's pretty blunt and harsh and telling a nurse to lie on their documentation wow that's really shocking but how many times does your charge nurse say hey did you charge your SED? Did you charge this? Did you do that unknowing if you really did  Making sure that you charted it so that the hospital can get paid for it they don't charge your every two hours they get paid for and we all know this we just do it.
I do get it. It's like the speeding challenge everybody speeds you're just the one that got caught. 🤷🏻‍♀️
God bless you and all the veterans and military families this weekend. Please stay safe and enjoy your weekend.!

Not sure how to DM on here, cause I made an account solely to respond to your issue cause I've been through something slightly similar, hoping I can help!!
if you have IG, maybe send me your handle and we can talk there? I'd drop mine here but I'm concerned people will see it and then have problems w/coworkers LOL 😅

No worries at this point I always say I have nothing else left to lose, I'm the only thing that I am 100% 100% confident of is my patient care and that's all I care about coworkers management admin. Yeah they kind of influence here and there, but I only care about the people in the bed it's the most vulnerable place to be in America right now  so like I said, I may write a book who knows🤷🏻‍♀️

Cori Ducote FB messenger I've even cut all social media, but I do keep this and never post for peace of mind. I don't mind if you want to drop me a DM there.

Thank you

You are such a nurse!! LOL I love it thank you so much. I am honored by your generosity and overwhelming depth of willing to help and serve a fellow nurse in need. I appreciate you and I would go to Oregon to work. I think it's one of the most beautiful states in our country. Thank you again and please keep in touch and I will keep updating this site..

I did research that avenue of putting down my Texas license applying for another state but to me it just looks shady and honestly, I can't afford to relocate myself to the bathroom. I'm kidding, but you know what I mean.;)

Davita Dialysis, home health agencys and also the VA are options. Health Departments too.

Seems really extreme measures from the BON just for CPR issue given you never had another issues. Ridiculous. I'm sorry you are going through this.

Yes, I apologize I am new to this..... its a mess. Court order is 12 months 64 hours a month, and warning stip will remain but not encumber. My Compact will return and it will FOREVER be in NURSYS. Yes in a supervised clinical setting no travel.

The Story is -  I moved form DFW to SA to work travel for COVID, I worked a good part of 2020-2021. As an experienced traveler I skipped around to different agencies for high rate. So  I applied with  8/2021 and I could not find the hands on portion for my BLS, bc of lockdowns so out of disparity to provide for my 3 kids, I uploaded a incorrect expiration date. I was wrong, I have no excuse!  the agency "liquid agents" sent me a message that I was not a good fit and so I moved on forgot all about it found a hands on BLS class, got my cert.  later that month. I did not find out about  investigation and lic issue from the BON until NOV 2022. From my manager who then told me she was canceling contract until I get it sorted out. I called BON asked why was I not notified in time to fix explain ect. what was the delay.  BON response  I did not update my new address.......! I explained that I renewed my LIC. last year to this address. They then told me that I did not update on website portal. !

It was Nov 2022 and Christmas sucked car repossessed evicted into an apt. I even had to surrender my French bulldog ;( bc I could not longer afford her care. I mean **** My daughters are working helping while they should be in college. That is the short story. I do appreciate any advice moving forward. I am struggling to let it go. Thankyou so much you all are very helpful and kind!

I don't know what you have left to lose but have you considered filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. I did this a while back and it canceled all my bills except student loans and rent because I did not list my landlord in my liabilities.  With about 5 years time the bankruptcy was "Seasoned" and I have not had any trouble applying for Credit  since. I now also keep a nest egg roughly equal to 1 years salary which would pay my bills should disaster strike again.

I am sorry this has happened to you. Nursing commissions are a joke. They are out of touch with reality to say the least. While Doctors stick up for each other and protect their practice, old unhappy nurses without real experience judge those who make a difference. If nurses stuck together like MD's this would not be an issue. I would get a lawyer and sue everyone on the board personally for their unrealistic and unreasonable judgement against you.

Are you kidding?  This didn't "happen to" OP, it was a consequence of an unethical and frankly illegal choice she made!   As to nurses sticking together, I fully believe we should stand up for a nurse who has done nothing wrong, but that is not the case here.  Nurses are responsible for life and death, and we have to take that responsibility seriously.  We should hold ourselves and each other to the highest standard.  As to suing the BON, what would you suggest OP charge them with - upholding the standards of the profession and enforcing the nurse practice act?

OP, sorry you are in this situation.  Hindsight is 20/20 and I'm sure you wish you could change your actions.  As to the job search, I'm sure it makes most hiring managers appropriately cautious.  However perhaps in a situation that would not involve patient care, they may be more lenient?  Truthfully I suspect this may be a hard one to come back from.  Falsification is right up there with HIPAA violations.  It might not be a bad idea to start considering other options just in case.

Lastly for anyone out there ever struggling to find a BLS class, there are online options with a virtual/remote "hands on" portion.  They mail you a dummy that you have to first put together, you turn the red/green light facing your laptop camera, and do your compressions/breaths as usual.  I did it during the pandemic and was impressed.   It was an AHA certification;  I only did BLS and ACLS but they also offer PALS.  Hope this helps anyone ever in OP's initial dilemma.

OP,

I hope you're doing fine. Thank you for sharing this.

I'm fine! I was deceptive and I should have handled myself better. As for Covid 2020-2021 BLS hands on portion not a class available AT ALL it was the thick of it 11/2020 in fact waivers were given out for perm staff.
hey we are all asked one time or another to chart a system or check a box deceptive charting pays the bills right, like speeding I was caught and I own it100%.
My MOST disheartening part I've tried to explain is sponsors help reps to help nurses like me caught at a moment of weakness and counseled. I mean even the nurses who struggle with addiction or have dui get assistance. It's difficult when not one facility will even look at your resume with probation warning stipulations and 15 years perfect record before hand. Those are my 2 huge issues I wish would change.
I'm accountable I have been from start I'm humbled I'm willing to work my way up start. With second chance everything but system won't allow it. So I was evicted, my family and I are in a hotel I've lost everything. Now I'm facing minimum wage 33 application 14 days trips phone calls to HR interviews with upfront explanations, pleading for a new start. Not one offer... sad I worked my way into this but I have something left and will keep going in my hope of finding peace.
