Broken RN License

Nurses Career Support

I have been an RN for 15 years licensed in 4 states, been in TX last 4 years. I was dishonest during covid and could not find a hands on BLS. The nursing board was alerted and I was given a warning with stipulations. Since then I have had my car repossessed evicted and lost almost everything due to finding a job. The stipulation is for 12 64 hours a month reporting of working in a hospital but I can not find a hospital nor emergency care that will hire me. Please I need guidance should I just give up change careers? Thank you

I admit I am humbled and I have never had a blemish until 2020.

thank you so much for your help.

Have you tried dialysis or psych? They seem to be more lenient in these matters,

I have applied to US Renal and Fresenius several times not even getting to an interview. The local hospitals all interview send my hire info to HR, I walk out talking with the manager about my rate and shift. Then either I do not hear back or I am told by text or email from HR personal that another has been chosen for position or no positions available. It is only when I in person politely request the truth is when I was told yes we do not hire RN with Stip on lic or "hit" on lic. Even if I am upfront with manager of the situation and my obligation and all aspects of order, they are willing to work with me, but HR NOPE! This is what I have found. So Nursing homes are my only ave. and I have only ICU experience I understand I could participate and do the job. I have tried free standing ER and rehab it does not work out due to my level of reteaching. So I assume I may have to reprogram my RN brain. I am very humbled to the core, I am accountable and not standing on a ICU throne I did make sure this was not the case but I do not seem to find anything in nursing for me. Thank you for your help and I may look into state or federal jobs? For some reason I heard a little about HHS working with nurses, it would be a commute but I am not sure what else to do.

On another note do I need to surrender my licenses if I chose to work in another industry at the moment?  Thank you for any and all information.

I appreciate your help guidance and taking the time to read my dilemma 😉

Try corrections either state or county. I've been at the same prison for 21 years and I love it. They are more lenient when it comes to the board.

Who was it that reported you? Was it your employer? Dealing with the BON is a real ***, they have total control over you.
I remember someone saying that mistakes/lapses during COVID would come back to bite us later on and it's so true.

Are you looking in the DFW area? I have heard a lot of healthcare providers there don't hire nurses with blemishes on their record. They're so big they can be picky. Texas is HUGE! Try a different area...even if it means moving. My favorite place to work (I have worked for several healthcare systems in Texas) has been United Regional Healthcare in Wichita Falls. Great place to work and not so far from the city that you can't make a day trip.

I am sorry this has happened to you. Nursing commissions are a joke. They are out of touch with reality to say the least. While Doctors stick up for each other and protect their practice, old unhappy nurses without real experience judge those who make a difference. If nurses stuck together like MD's this would not be an issue. I would get a lawyer and sue everyone on the board personally for their unrealistic and unreasonable judgement against you.

I would not recommend that you surrender your licenses. If you can't afford to renew, see if there is a way to go to inactive status without surrendering. I would at least renew your compact license. It's a pain to get back. And you didn't do anything that warrants a surrender. I wasn't sure exactly what you meant by the 12 64 hours a month of working in a hospital. Will this go away in 12 months?

I lived and worked in Dallas for 5 years. I loved it, BUMC CV pre Heart transplant, and I helped open Baylor McKinney. I worked in SICU at Parkland before they moved to the Big House.

Yes I did get on at a little hospital in Kerrville, it was great the commute was 60 miles so it took a toll on my family being away and gas prices.......smh. I swear perfect storm.  I am a pretty tough cookie, I served in the military I was active duty, put myself though school as a single mom. NOW, I can not afford to buy a new car since the other one was repossessed, it  has to end soon. Thank you for your input, this site is helpful and has lifted my spirits a little.

Yes, I apologize I am new to this..... its a mess. Court order is 12 months 64 hours a month, and warning stip will remain but not encumber. My Compact will return and it will FOREVER be in NURSYS. Yes in a supervised clinical setting no travel.

The Story is -  I moved form DFW to SA to work travel for COVID, I worked a good part of 2020-2021. As an experienced traveler I skipped around to different agencies for high rate. So  I applied with  8/2021 and I could not find the hands on portion for my BLS, bc of lockdowns so out of disparity to provide for my 3 kids, I uploaded a incorrect expiration date. I was wrong, I have no excuse!  the agency "liquid agents" sent me a message that I was not a good fit and so I moved on forgot all about it found a hands on BLS class, got my cert.  later that month. I did not find out about  investigation and lic issue from the BON until NOV 2022. From my manager who then told me she was canceling contract until I get it sorted out. I called BON asked why was I not notified in time to fix explain ect. what was the delay.  BON response  I did not update my new address.......! I explained that I renewed my LIC. last year to this address. They then told me that I did not update on website portal. !

It was Nov 2022 and Christmas sucked car repossessed evicted into an apt. I even had to surrender my French bulldog ;( bc I could not longer afford her care. I mean **** My daughters are working helping while they should be in college. That is the short story. I do appreciate any advice moving forward. I am struggling to let it go. Thankyou so much you all are very helpful and kind!

Thank you for all your advice and taking the time to read my concerns and offer your advice. I miss that.  I may write a book !

So sorry you went through this. Have you considered getting a lawyer? I'm sure it would be a hard thing to pay for.  I just don't feel like this should be on your license forever, it's not that kind of thing, and I think if you get a chance to plead your case, a reasonable person would cut you some slack. I feel like you have the right attitude about it, and clearly you have suffered enough.

Let us know how it goes with the suggestions you've gotten for getting a job. I would also suggest community psych/addictions. In non-profit community psych and addictions it's common to have a culture of no background check. They hire a lot of recovering addicts and people with criminal history because these are often the best people to work with people facing those kinds of issues. I'm not saying that what you did rises to that level, I am just pointing out that HR may be accustomed to noting stipulations and moving forward anyway.
