Hi all,

Is there anyone in this forum who works at BWH? I'm currently working in a hospital here in San Francisco & looking to move back to Boston next year. I work in TICU - Transitional ICU. I'm just wondering if BWH has a TICU unit. I like working in critical care. I have 1+ yrs. of experience so far. Thanks!

Yes, BWH has several step down units, the more experience you get the better the candidate you will be.

Thanks Alex. Approx. how much is the starting salary per hr. for nurses with over 1 yr. of experience at BWH?

I hope you are aware that Boston hospitals pay about twice less then San Francisco hospitals for the same job and the cost of living in Boston is comparable to that in SF. The starting salary in Boston would be around $28/hr.

Is $28/hr the rate for an experienced nurse or new grad?

I turned down a job at the Brigham in April. At the time I had 1 year of experience and they offered me $30.15/hr (they are up for contract re negotiation). As a previous poster stated, the pay in Boston is about 30% less than San Fran, but the cost of living is almost the same.

Do you consider someone with one year of experience as an experienced nurse? To be in a higher pay bracket you should have 10+ years of experience.

The pay rate in Boston is at least 50% lower then in SF.

BWH would not consider you a new grad. They are in contract renegotiation talks currently so your pay will probably be somewhere around 30-32 an hour. Good luck!

I can answer for Gerry. It sucks. It is one of the most unappreciated, unhealthy, and underpaid professions on the market today.

I honestly like being a nurse. I like my work schedule, and the pay is not bad either. I work three days a week and get 4 consecutive days off. In other words, I work 12 days a month and 6 months a year. The pay is good also (1.6 years experience $36.73/hr).

Sure some days are better than others, but that can be said about any job.

Glad you like it. Most hospital nurses work 12 hr shifts. The downside of working on this kind of schedule is that you leave the house when it's dark (except in the summer) and you leave the hospital at the end of the shift when it's dark. There is no fresh air in the hospital and windows don't open. Where is no sunlight inside. You babysit a group of the same patients for 12 hrs. Nurses in general are very vulnerable to abuse not only by doctors, but even more by other nurses and patients' families (there is a research on that). So I would recommend to anybody who decide to choose this profession to get hired as a CNA first and work for a month or two before advancing any further.
