I was just wondering how you feel about this subject. Do you have them? Would you get them? Have you cared for patients with them and what was your experience? Have you seen any good or bad outcomes?
Thank you, and this is my issue with it.
I agree w/Marie. I have seen women wake up from breast aug. & they all immed. look down at their 'new toys' & some are horrified that they're so big-- one girl said "oh my god, what did I do? They're huge!" of course the final result isn't immed. apparent- and they do not look natural right away (if ever) - another patient cried & became angry w/the doc b/c they weren't big enough!! (350cc on a very thin young woman). America's 'ideal' of beauty is warped- fake boobs will never make anyone happy- furthermore, a large percentage of these women will be back for other surgeries to correct perceived imperfections- so yes, I agree, there are other issues at play here.

I wouldn't even call it beauty. Airbrushing of photographs isn't natural, therefore i don't think it's beauty. A zit here and there is understandable, but if you've seen the before and after photos from some big magazine shoot, you'd be amazed at the "fat" that they shave off of some 5'10" 125 pound woman's legs. And ever notice that NO ONE in ANY magazine has a stretch mark. Hell i've never been pregnant and i have plenty of them!
And beauty IS something that comes from within. Someone could be absolutely gorgeous according to the ideal, have horrible self-esteem, and wouldn't be as noticed physically. Surgery is not always going to fix that.
I think a lot of it is all about attitude. I've always started out with "don't like it don't look," which i can credit to Grandma. I refuse to conform to scoiety's idea of what's pretty or sexy. For one, it wouldn't be me and i'd lose myself in the process, and two, money doesn't grow on trees.
I just read Maureen Dowd's new book "Are Men Necessary". For the men reading this, the title is satire. She stated that it used to be men who objectified women as sex objects. Now it's women who objectify themselves as sex objects. Women do this in various ways such as the breast augmentations, collagen injections, liposuction, and excess focus on "sexy girly" things as opposed to intellectual and career development. I so agree with Maureen Dowd.
Marie,
Just wait till you get to the part in the book where Dowd discusses a study that shows that there is an inverse relationship between intelligence and marriage rates among women. In other words, the more intelligent you are, the lower your chances are of getting married. Flibberdagibet!

I have to get this book! My husband has long maintained that women get implants (& other plastic surgeries) not for men, but for other women. The bottom line is self esteem does not come in the form of plastic surgery- we can't inject ourselves & suddenly get healthy self esteem! Until we realize that our bodies/our weight/our breasts do not define who we are, we are exploiting ourselves!!
Okay, I am going to put in my two cents, or maybe more. I had always been a toothpick. In jr high, I heard ALL of the jokes; 'carpenter's dream', hide behind a light post', 'band-aids for those mosquito bites',.... ad nauseum. I absolutely dreaded the swimming semster in the 10th grade, not because I couldn't swim, but because I did NOT want to be seen in a bathing suit!!!! Actually, swimming was the ONLY sport in gym I was any good at, but the fear of the snickers and out and out laughter ruined any semblance of enjoyment for me. Do you know, I even was told by a girl (whom I had THOUGHT was intelligent),that she felt sorry for my kids if I ever had any? In my own stupidity, I asked her why. She said that I wouldn't be able to feed them!!! Fortunately, I knew better, but it was the idea that it is okay for girls to say things like that, that ticked me off. Remarks were made equally by boys and girls. By the time I reached 20 and had given birth, I was a whole 34 AAA, no joke. I didn't DWELL on it, but it obviously bothered me enough that my parents noticed. On a radio talk-show that they listened to, there was a discussion about breast augmentation. My parents talked about it and my dad told my mom to tell me that if we looked into it and I wanted it done, he would pay for it. I had it done by a very reputable plastic surgeon in Indianapolis. I was not dating anyone at the time, but WAS attending a church with my then 3 year old daughter. There was a guy in my Sunday school class that I had NO interest in at the time, but married him a year later. :chuckle Some time after we were married, we were talking about my surgery, when I had done it, etc...
He swears he remembered the first Sunday after my surgery (of which NOONE knew anything about), he said he looked at me, knew something was different but couldn't put his finger on what. :rotfl: As an added funny, I went to a dept. store a few weeks after the 'job' to try on bras (for the first time in my life), had my 3 year old with me. I took off my shirt to try one on and Allison said (loudly), " MAMA, where did you get those BIG muscles?"
I'm sorry this is so long, but I have never regretted doing it to FEEL LIKE A GIRL!!!! I did it for ME!! I could finally put on a bathing suit and not look strange, but feel feminine. I have nursed 3 babies and had 2 mammograms with no problems.I actually found a lump about 8 or 9 years ago right next to the nipple. I had it removed,out-patient, it was a fibroidadenoma, pea sized. The surgeon said I probably found it SOONER because the scar tissue pushes everything (what little there is) to the top!! Now, we all know that those are not even PRE cancerous, but the point was made. Now, wasn't THAT more info than you wanted?:chuckle !! Oh, one more note, I don't think my husband would care either way, we've been married for 20 + years!!
