Boss Did My Annual Review--without Me..

Published

Hi everyone....Just wondering:

I was on leave from work to have gall bladder surgery, and I was looking forward to my annual review when I returned. I felt it would be a good one and I also wanted to express some feelings about my performance, seeing how the review is basis for a raise. But when I came back, my supervisor told me they had done the review without me! Is this common? He said that they 'couldn't wait' for me. He was in a hurry and told me to contact the secretary to find out about it. I felt short changed. Is it OK to request another meeting?

Thanks!

Sometimes there is a deadline for submitting review documents - but really, the whole point of a review is to discuss and document your performance, so it's really quite pointless if you're not there! I'd definitely ask for a meeting to discuss it.

I agree with augigi... if you were out for a while, they probably had to go ahead and submit your review along with everyone else's. However, it would be rather unreasonable IMO for your supervisor to not be willing to set aside some time to discuss the review with you.

You feel short-changed because you were short changed. Managers are well-aware when reviews are due and "throwing something together" just to meet some HR requirement isn't doing you or him any good.

I would assume that you got an "A" on everything and are a 1st rate employee and don't need to improve on anything considering he didn't even go over it with you.....I'm being sarcastic....but you see my point?

I would definitely have a chat with him.

Reviews , especially when they are connected to a raise are a formality. The raise you get is pretty much predetermined depending on budget unless you have been quite outstanding 100% of the time or you have been completely incompetent.

Most raises that are connected to a evaluation are based on a point system and all performance levels have a predetermined value unless there is something that repeatedly stands out about you that the others dont have. Remember its in the budget and everyone gets to have a raise so if they give you more, its going to take away from someone else. Thats why any raise connected to a evaluation is pretty much never going to change.

You can go discuss your performance with your manager/supervisor but dont expect it to change anything on your evaluation that would change the amount of your raise. It rarely to NEVER happens. Thats why they went ahead and did it without you, there isnt anything you could add that would change your raise. And thats pretty much the only reason they have them is because they have to document the basis for your raise. Its formality when it concerns raises.

Be glad they didnt wait till you got back, it got your wage increased sooner.

Absolutely! Write a memo so you have documentation and put in the memo pretty much what you put in your post here. Address the memo to your boss. Keep a copy for yourself. You are also entitled to a copy of your evaluation.

As the would say something is rotten in Denmark.

Typically when one takes a leave of absence time lines get frozen or pushed back so I for one dont buy the it had to be done excuse. Also any place I have ever worked ones review is not offical until you sign it.

SO personally me and the boss would be having a little chat. If you get no where with that then may be a chat with that persons boss would be the next place to go.

Just where did you go to recover from your surgery that there wasn't a phone? The moon?

I would seek an appointment with the manager and discuss how this bothers you, with him. And do ask to see a copy of the written report and have any concerns explained to you right away. Take the proverbial bull by the horns, don't let this just "happen" to you.

Take care and I hope you are recovering well. Just had my GB out, too.

My last one was done in pencil and I HAD to sign it. I made a copy of it, though.

This will put a huge target on your back as well; if you do this, be prepared to deal with the consequences. Bosses don't like to be challenged. You can be easily replace with a new grad, esp. once you start taking medical leave and the like.

Unfortunately this is common, but you most definately have the right to reqest a re-review with the supervisor and whoever else rated your performance. Definately put it in a written request with cc: to whoever is supposed to be there. There is no logical reason they could not have waited until you returned. Had they been on surgery leave your review would have been postponed and you would be waiting on them.........???!!! My Boss/M.D. can't seem to evaluate anyone in his office without asking everybody else's opinion, regardless if they work with me directly or not. The sad part is that I am his nurse and right arm 40 hrs a week. So, yes, this does happen alot and you must try and ask for a re-eval.................I feel your frustration!!!!!!
