Book recomendations

Forgive the intrusion to this forum...

My niece (not a nurse) is struggling with recovery and would like to start a book club for women focusing on addiction/recovery.

Can you recommend any memoirs or novels (no self help books) to consider that deal with the subject? She is not in a situation she can do any research on book choices so I am helping out.

Thank you!

You may want to contact your local AA or NA chapter they would probably have a list of them. Of course the 1st one they recommend is the Big Book it doesn't matter whether it's drugs or alcohol. Also it's all self help with a support group because you have to help yourself and want recovery no one can make you do it. I'm assuming she's either in a program or incarcerated and that's the best time to give her stuff to read even if it's not her choice of material. She'll get bored enough and read it. It's so sweet of you to be helping her it's a really hard situation to be in

Thank you. I should clarify....they have access to the Big Book and plenty of self help books and self help groups already. Not trying to avoid that, just looking to add to it on a different level.

My favorite book in recovery was God on a Harley.

I really liked Caroline Knapp's "Drinking: A Love Story." It's a memoir that details her struggles with alcoholism and recovery.

Impaired: a nurses story is fantastic! I cried like a baby when I read it. It is to die for and truly touches on trying to get well with loads of pressure placed on the individual.

Thank you, I will check into those :)

This was an INCREDIBLE book. Ms Knapp was one of my favorite authors. Sadly, although she remained sober, she was a heavy smoker and died of lung cancer in her early 40's.

Her writing is some of the most honest I have ever read. It was also very well-written and perceptive.

By the way, she also wrote a book about the relationship of dogs to humans called: Pack of Two. I could not recommend her books more highly.
