Hey all--My A&P professor is asking/encouraging us to visit an exhibt called Body Worlds in a museum in Philly, PA. It is composed of real human cadavers in different positions prevserved w/ a method called plastination. It is like 7hrs away from where I am so a couple of ppl from my class are going up, staying the night, and going to the exhibt and The Body at the Imax theatre. He is really making it worth our while. After the semester is over, those of us who go to this exhibit will be able to replace our lowest lab practical or lecture exam with 100. That is worth a travel for me, although I am doing really well now, who knows what will happen?Anywho.. I just want to know what anyone who has seen this thought. Real cadavers exposed in public? Thoughts? I know those of us studying medical professions see this all the time, but do you think it is tasteful in public? I am personally all for education, but I wanted to get other perspectives. The most contriversal exhibit is of a 8 month pregnant woman w/ her fetus still inside. It has been all over the country. I am excited to see all the things I have been learning about. I'm such a dork, my spring break trip is to philly to see cadavers!:uhoh21: http://www.koerperwelten.com/en/pages/ausstellung_asien.asp

You will be thrilled ! Dh was kinda grossed out but nurses love it. The persons (cadavers) had to give permission to be plasticated. What a wonderful gift to education. Go, run ! Don't worry. Have fun.

It was pretty cool to see, especially when you realize that the average person would never be able to see this otherwise. I took my dad and he was also very impressed with it. I kept pointing little things out to him like "that's the ankle ligament I had repaired" I was also explaining things to him as we went and he said he was glad to see that my education is actually paying off! I saw all kinds of people there - just goes to show you that most people really are interested in what their body looks like/does.It was pretty controversial in Tampa when the exhibit came because the cadavers were all from Japan and people didn't think they had consented to having their bodies viewed in public. Apparantly they had so the exhibit was allowed to go on. I think you'll enjoy it! I bought a couple of good anatomy study books from the bookstore there too!

Mar 11, 2006 here is the info and link to being a donor in case you're interested ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ all anatomical specimens on display in the exhibitions of body worlds and body worlds 2 are authentic. they belonged to people who declared during their lifetime that their bodies should be made available after their deaths for the qualification of physicians and the instruction of laypersons. many donors underscore that by donating their body, they want to be useful to others even after their death. their selfless donations allow us to gain unique insights into human bodies, which have thus far been reserved for physicians at best. therefore, we wish to thank the 6000 living and 300 deceased body donors. for these purposes the heidelberg institute for plastination maintains a special body donation program. before signing a declaration of intent, all body donors are provided with detailed information. an information brochure published precisely for this purpose informs donors about the plastination technique, the history of body donation for plastination, information on the institute for plastination, how to become a body donor, what happens with the body at the institute after death, and how the plastinates are used. body donation for plastination purposes constitutes a declaration of will, which may be revoked at any time. once a year a body donation meeting takes place at the institute for plastination in heidelberg. meeting gunther von hagens personally gives body donors the opportunity to exchange views with him. moreover news around the body worlds exhibitons as well as new projects are presented at this opportunity. further information are also available from the german federal association of body donors.if you are interested in becoming a body donor for plastination, please contact our body donation offices in europe or the united states.here you can download the information brochures and the donor's consents:europe: 1. download information brochure "body donation for plastination"2. download donor's consent north america: 1. download information brochure "body donation for plastination"2. download donor's consent if you're downloading the consent forms, please note that the donor id card mentioned will be sent to you when you submit your paperwork.

I think the idea originated in Germany and people got upset when they first went public with it. I don't remember it's been a few years back since I first read about it.

I don't remember it's been a few years back since I first read about it.I was reading online that the German guy who came up with the plastination process did an autopsy of a 72 year old man in an art gallery. I think it would be interesting to see, but an art gallery?stpauligirl- They have this show, i think there are 3 different ones, all over the nation. Go to the website originally posted and they have the places that it is showing. I hope you can get to one-- I think it sounds awesome! I'll let you know on Thursday when I get back what I think.

I was going to try to see it this spring during spring break but some things came up and I have other things to attend to, now.Several of my friends have gone and a few are going back because they enjoyed it so much.Have fun if you decide to make the trip. :)

I will jump at the opportunity if I visit Colorado. Hopefully my husband will still be in Ft. carson at the time, and not in Saudi Arabia His assignment just started 2 weeks ago and may last from 3 to 9 months. thanks for posting!!!!
panzyo3 91 Posts Mar 11, 2006 I actually went and saw Body Worlds last night at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. I am currently taking A&P, and I actually think it might help me do better on the tests, because you actually get to see the parts of the body systems we are learning about in class. It's just a really neat exhibit in general and I would encourage anyone who has a chance to go and see it!
