I know this is kind of early but I just wanted to check if anybody plans to apply for the Spring 2011 nursing program at BMCC (Borough of Manhattan Community College) in NYC. I just met the preclinical advisor this week and he gave an update that CUNY eliminated the need for non-preclinical students (like me who's currently at liberal arts at BMCC) to first change their curriculum to preclinical before applying for the nursing program.
Here's an April 30 memo from the nursing department for anybody who wants to apply for the nursing program:
------------------
TO: All Non-Nursing Students
FROM: The Nursing Department
DATE: April 30, 2010
RE: Admission into the Nursing Program
Non-nursing student who want to apply to the Nursing program please note the following:
1. Admission into the Nursing program is based on the GPA in the four required prerequisite courses (Eng101, Psy100, Mat104 and BIO425) and the overall GPA for both the Day and Evening/Weekend Nursing Programs.
2. Students who want to apply for the Full-Time Day Program must wait one semester after completion of the four required pre-requisite courses to apply for admission into the Nursing program.
3. Students who work full-time during the day and want to apply for the Part-Time Evening/Weekend Program must wait one semester after completion of the following courses: ENG101, PSY100, MAT104, BIO425, BIO426, BIO420, and PSY240 or SOC100 in order to apply for admission into the Nursing Program.
4. Please be aware that admission into the Nursing Program is also based on seat availability. The College does not guarantee admission into the Nursing Program.
5. In order to advance into the Nursing Program, students must provide documentation for one of the following categories:
US Citizenship, Permanent Residency, and International Students with F1 status, Granted Asylum, Refugee Status, Temporary Protected Status, Withholding of Removal, Deferred Enforced Departure or Deferred Action Status by the US Government.
-------------
By the way, for those who are applying in late October for the Spring 2011 program, make sure to bring your advisement sheet and transcript if you took some prereqs outside BMCC. If you're applying for the evening program, also bring proof of your current employment.
I'm sooo excited to apply and can't wait for October!
Best Regards,
Dee
Hey Bilis,
I have a quick question for you, which hospitals did you do your clinicals at? Also, I take Clonopin for my anxiety and I have an active rx for it, so for the drug screen, would one have to bring the rx bottle or just a letter from your doctor confirming the rx?
I just don't want anything shady to happen, so I want to have everything covered. Any help would be awesome!

Hi xilostgirlxi,
We did our clinical practices at Bellevue Hospital, Mary Manning Walsh, and Woodhull Medical Center. As far as a drug screen, I don't recall. We had to get a physical from your doctor and make sure your vaccinations are current. I'm thinking that if you have an Rx for a medication, I don't see that to be a problem. Take care of all the requirements (physical, vaccine records, and the Liability Insurance) and be prepared for the math test. Hope this helps.
Best regards,
Bilis
Hey Bilis,
Thanks so much for responding, I am so excited to get started on the clinicals and was just wondering where they would be.
So there was no drug screen for you or you just don't recall?
I called my dr to ask him what he thought and he said the rx would be sufficient, but he would provide a letter if necessary. So that's taken care of.
Congrats on finishing your first semester of nursing!!!

Hey ~xilostgirlxi,
Thanks, to you as well for the acceptance to the program. The blood test you have to get is for the titers regarding the immunity of the vaccines you've had I don't think is necessarily a drug test. When you go to orientation you will meet your professor and will orient you to what they expect. What program are you on? Eve. or day?
Bilis
Hey Bilis,
Thanks so much for answering my non-stop questions, it would make most sense to just wait and ask someone at orientation next week. I am in the day program, is it much different from the evening or is the only difference the hours in class?
Thanks again for all your help in answering my questions.

Hey ~xilostgirlxi,
I would think it's the same, just the schedule hours and of course the professor that's instructing the course. The professor I had was wonderful. I enjoyed the class fully. Clinicals may be scary at first, but you learn a lot from them. I hope next semester will be as fulfilling as my first. I remember the anxiety I felt from the first moment I was told I was accepted, but believe me it goes by so fast so be ready to work.

Still at work...sigh. But monitoring the conversation . Hey Bilis, if my section will have the same professor as what you had then, I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the class, I'm sure I will too. I'll message you the list of books we need as soon as I get home. I also wanted to ask if your prof. has any quirks or preference worth noting just to prepare :)
Best Regards,
Dee
@ Dee,
bummer, will you be able to work around the schedule? Seems you work late. As far as the prof goes, he's pretty fair. All his tests are multiple choice, but again I stress the fact that you need to learn the concepts because the questions are not straight forward. In other words you have to apply the concepts to the sceneros given, can be very tricky. I attended class every day and sat in the front row (helps...no distractions). He was very understanding if you had a problem you needed addressed and tries to help as much as he can. I had a great experience.

Hi Dee!
Yep, I mailed in my malpractice insurance and sent in a check for $20. I put down that I was not associated with the NSA, I think that section is for LPN's that may already be associated with the NSA. I also began to review the Math 104. Do you think we are going to have to know the BSA formula or converting oz to mL?
Also I am glad to hear you sit up front too! I have shoulder length straight brown hair, and I will have my brown purse and a marble notebook. I'll look for you!
I already ordered all my books online from the BMCC bookstore. I am still waiting for the books to arrive.

Hi Bilis,
I actually have a pretty flexible schedule thanks to my boss but I do have to work late sometimes if I have a deadline. I'll have to see how good I am at juggling things . Thanks for the tip on the professor! I can't wait to study under his class.
Thanks!

Dee

Hey Mel,
What did you put on anticipated graduation date and effective date of coverage for the malpractice insurance? I'm going to mail mine tomorrow. I have also already registered to take the CPR class and will take them this Saturday (better get it over it as early as possible ) .
Not sure about the formulas. I remember having them on an index card but we did not memorize them. That might be good to ask next week.
Can't wait to meet you, see you Wednesday
Best Regards,
Dee

Hey Dee,
I did well surprisingly. I'm on the evening program and had a good semester. A lot of new things, but if you keep up with the material (a lot of it) you'll do fine. I'll admit, it's not an easy course, but I'm sure you've heard that already. Read, watch the videos, do the online stuff, and try to understand the concepts as they are not straight forward on the tests. The math is basically what you'd seen already from Mat 104. You get 10 questions and you have to get 8 right to pass. Oh and no calculator so make sure you brush up on your arithmetic skills.
Best of luck,
Bilis
