I know this is kind of early but I just wanted to check if anybody plans to apply for the Spring 2011 nursing program at BMCC (Borough of Manhattan Community College) in NYC. I just met the preclinical advisor this week and he gave an update that CUNY eliminated the need for non-preclinical students (like me who's currently at liberal arts at BMCC) to first change their curriculum to preclinical before applying for the nursing program.
Here's an April 30 memo from the nursing department for anybody who wants to apply for the nursing program:

TO: All Non-Nursing Students
FROM: The Nursing Department
DATE: April 30, 2010
RE: Admission into the Nursing Program
Non-nursing student who want to apply to the Nursing program please note the following:
1. Admission into the Nursing program is based on the GPA in the four required prerequisite courses (Eng101, Psy100, Mat104 and BIO425) and the overall GPA for both the Day and Evening/Weekend Nursing Programs.
2. Students who want to apply for the Full-Time Day Program must wait one semester after completion of the four required pre-requisite courses to apply for admission into the Nursing program.
3. Students who work full-time during the day and want to apply for the Part-Time Evening/Weekend Program must wait one semester after completion of the following courses: ENG101, PSY100, MAT104, BIO425, BIO426, BIO420, and PSY240 or SOC100 in order to apply for admission into the Nursing Program.
4. Please be aware that admission into the Nursing Program is also based on seat availability. The College does not guarantee admission into the Nursing Program.
5. In order to advance into the Nursing Program, students must provide documentation for one of the following categories:
US Citizenship, Permanent Residency, and International Students with F1 status, Granted Asylum, Refugee Status, Temporary Protected Status, Withholding of Removal, Deferred Enforced Departure or Deferred Action Status by the US Government.

By the way, for those who are applying in late October for the Spring 2011 program, make sure to bring your advisement sheet and transcript if you took some prereqs outside BMCC. If you're applying for the evening program, also bring proof of your current employment.
I'm sooo excited to apply and can't wait for October!
Best Regards,
Dee
dear dee,.... but if i do complete the prereqs in liu will it be the same pre-nursing classes that are going to be needed here in nj....im so confused and have a little bit of time left...also let me know if you know anything about nj nursing schools that offer a bsn...in nursing........
Hi Elizabeth,
Unfortunately you will not know that the prereqs you will take in LIU will match those in NJ unless you already have a school in mind in NJ. You might want to check out the NJ Nursing Programs Discussion as I don't have any idea on the best nursing schools in this state.
Good luck Elizabeth. I hope you will be able to resolve your dilemma soon. Sorry I can't be of much help at this stage
Best Regards,
Dee
Hey Steffanie, glad to know you are in the day program. Which of the two schedule options are u hoping for??....I'm kind of worried because l'm also taking a&p ll and the only class available when l registered was on tues and friday, so l would have a conflict of schedules in case l get the one with HOSP on tuesdays!!! ;(
Hey Caro,
I'm pretty sure all the health clearance forms and vax are due the first day of class. Also, the paperwork says that the original copy with the original dr signature must be submitted, no photo copies. I'm not sure what you mean when you say copies of the vax since the titers MUST be attached with the health form along with the dates of the vax.
Hope this helps!

Unfortunately it seems that cutoff point was higher than 3.84...
Hi Tarasik,
Unfortunately I do not know the cut-off for Spring 2011 but for Fall 2010 it was 3.86 for both eve & day. You can call the nursing dept and ask and they will tell you, or Mr. S will also know, but I would not be surprised if the GPA requirement went up this semester. I could be wrong since for the past few semesters it was 3.86, but I heard more and more people were getting 3.9 in the pre-reqs so it could have gone up to maybe 3.9.
Call the dept and they'll help you out. Hope this helps!

Hey xilostgirlxi,
Thanks for your answer. What l meant by copies of the vaccines is that I found my vaccination records from 4 years ago. All my records are from my country and it turns out I already had all the vaccines so l obviously don't need the shots or the titers to prove immunity, so l would need to attach a copy of my vaccination records to the original physical examination form and keep the originals for me! what do u think?

Hi Caro,
You do need the titers, that is a requirement for the health clearance forms, it says so on the health form. I got my MMR and hep B vax when I was a little girl, but the immunization record with the dates is not valid enough, the hospitals MUST see the titers so it can be shown that you have the antibodies for the viruses/diseases. You can bring your immunization record to the doctor to show that you have the vax but they still need to do a blood panel for the titers and attach the titers to the health form. I called BMCC and they confirmed this, the clinical sites need proof that you have the vax, not just the dates (which is no longer valid as proof).
Also, you need to make sure that if you have not had a PPD in the past 12 months, then you MUST get tested TWICE and they must be a week apart from each other (you have to understand that TB is a very serious illness and NYC is the epicenter of TB outbreaks so hospitals take that very seriously). However, people not from the USA might have gotten the BCG vax which causes one to test positive for the PPD, in that case a recent chest x-ray is mandatory to determine whether you are at risk to others. This chest x-ray must also be attached to the clearance forms.
Also, when was your last TDaP? I'm sure you got the vax as a child (everyone does) but you must get a booster if needed because the original vax loses its immunity after some time (another reason titers are done). I know this sounds like a pain, but in the hospital you're exposed to so many different microbes that the staff must be protected.
Let me know if you have any more questions regarding this, I know it's a lot of stuff but it's worth it to become a nurse!
