BMCC Spring 2011 hopefuls?

Published

I know this is kind of early but I just wanted to check if anybody plans to apply for the Spring 2011 nursing program at BMCC (Borough of Manhattan Community College) in NYC. I just met the preclinical advisor this week and he gave an update that CUNY eliminated the need for non-preclinical students (like me who's currently at liberal arts at BMCC) to first change their curriculum to preclinical before applying for the nursing program.

Here's an April 30 memo from the nursing department for anybody who wants to apply for the nursing program:

------------------

TO: All Non-Nursing Students

FROM: The Nursing Department

DATE: April 30, 2010

RE: Admission into the Nursing Program

Non-nursing student who want to apply to the Nursing program please note the following:

1. Admission into the Nursing program is based on the GPA in the four required prerequisite courses (Eng101, Psy100, Mat104 and BIO425) and the overall GPA for both the Day and Evening/Weekend Nursing Programs.

2. Students who want to apply for the Full-Time Day Program must wait one semester after completion of the four required pre-requisite courses to apply for admission into the Nursing program.

3. Students who work full-time during the day and want to apply for the Part-Time Evening/Weekend Program must wait one semester after completion of the following courses: ENG101, PSY100, MAT104, BIO425, BIO426, BIO420, and PSY240 or SOC100 in order to apply for admission into the Nursing Program.

4. Please be aware that admission into the Nursing Program is also based on seat availability. The College does not guarantee admission into the Nursing Program.

5. In order to advance into the Nursing Program, students must provide documentation for one of the following categories:

US Citizenship, Permanent Residency, and International Students with F1 status, Granted Asylum, Refugee Status, Temporary Protected Status, Withholding of Removal, Deferred Enforced Departure or Deferred Action Status by the US Government.

-------------

By the way, for those who are applying in late October for the Spring 2011 program, make sure to bring your advisement sheet and transcript if you took some prereqs outside BMCC. If you're applying for the evening program, also bring proof of your current employment.

I'm sooo excited to apply and can't wait for October!

Best Regards,

Dee

hi xilostgirlxi,

Wow that's a lot to take in!...That sucks big time! I'm an international student so that means is going to cost me a fortune to get those titers, it's going to be like another tuition and l just thing is so stupid cuz l got all my vaccines in my country when I was applying to college there.

Something i dont get is why you need TWO tb tests? it doesnt say that on the forms, i mean one test is proof enough.

sorry to bother you with a million doubts but this application is a pain in...:0)

Hey Mel,

It was great meeting you and your hubby at the CPR class today :D. The class was awesome in my opinion. It was also cool meeting other soon-to-be classmates. Can't wait to meet everybody on Wednesday!

Hey Solange,

Thanks for the vaccine/titer information. I actually almost have the same question as Caro's except I had my MMR titers in late 2008 and still have copies of the results with me. My doctor said they were still fine to use but not sure if BMCC would want to have a more updated titer results.

if you guys have not yet taken the CPR class, my advice is to take them at the one offered by BMCC Continuing Education. The instructor was funny and very good at what he does. I believe the next class is Jan. 22.

Best Regards,

Dee

If it helps, I had asked Mr. ****** what the cut off was. It was 3.77 for the evening program and 3.86 for the day program.

Hi Dee,

It was great to meet you too!! It looks like we are going to have a great class this semester :) See you on Wednesday!

Hi Caro,

Ya it's a giant pain to get all these things in order, when I saw the clearance form I kinda prepped myself for the pain it would be to get this stuff in order. On the health clearance form it does actually state, "if you have not been tested for TST in the past 12 months, you will need to be boosted now with TWO consecutive TST done a week apart" and the form provides space for the two results. In NYC it is standard that one MUST be tested for PPD twice, I know its a pain but it's mandatory.

As for the other vax, the reason they require titers is because writing a date on a piece of paper and a doctors signature is no actual proof of the vax, also some vax require boosters or if the titers show that the individual is non-immune/unequivocal, then they must be revaccinated or else they could get sick. The titers are the hospitals guarantee that you pose no threat to already immunosuppressed individuals or to the staff.

I know this will be annoying to deal with, I have like 10 dr appts set up for the next two weeks just to get this taken care of. And you don't bother me at all with your questions, I completely understand your frustration with this. Let me know if I can help with anything else.

Xilostgirlxi I appreciate your help!!! Are you in the day or evening program?

Do you know an estimate of the cost of the titers??

Hey Dee,

I'm glad I could help with the titer/vax info, I think your '08 titers would work, but call BMCC and ask or just wait till Wed and ask the people then, they'll let you know.

Also I'm planning on taking the CPR class at BMCC too, I'm going on the 22nd. I noticed that it's from 9-5 which seems like a long time, so does the time go quickly, is it fun/interesting? Thanks!

Hey Caro,

I'm in the day program! Unfortunately I don't know the cost of titers, but I think that there are clinics that offer those type of services at a discounted price. I'm sorry I can't be of more help with this, but if I hear anything I'll let you know.

Are you excited for Wed? I can't wait to register for the classes and be officially a BMCC Nursing student!!! Hope to see you there!!

-xilostgirlxi

Hey I'm in the day program as well! l hope to see you on Wed, I'm excited and nervous at the same time about getting the section l want!

It was actually 9-3:30 with 30 minutes lunch. It went quickly enough as the instructor was very entertaining as well. Just bring pen and paper for your notes. There's also an exam at the end (multiple choice, 20 questions) but it was not that hard as long as you listened. It was fun and informative for me =)

Best Regards,

Dee

Hey all,

So I'm reviewing for the math competency exam but I'm not sure what I should be focusing on. Does anyone know what types of formulas/questions will be asked? I dont know if I should start from the beginning or only focus on certain things.

Can anyone help me out in this? Thanks in advance!!!

Wondering the same...
