I've seen lots of medical professionals with Boston type clog shoes. I wore Birk Bostons for years when I was younger...the only thing I found was that every once in a while my foot would slip out of the shoe. It seemed to happen when I was going up stairs and I would have to chase my shoe.
But otherwise Birk's provide really good support...I myself have been considering the Birki plastic shoe.
My first pair for work was one of their enclosed pair that laced up. Loved them. Wore for over a year. Then when all the clogs were in style, I found clogs at less than $50 per pair and over a short period, I bought 6 pair. Well, the first pair is all I wore as I developed some problem with my great toe joint that developed due to the clog allowing too much stress to be placed on that joint when walking fast in a clog. I am currently researching whether to buy MBT's or birkenstocks. Goodluck.
I have been breaking in the Alpro Birkenstock G500 (?) closed-back clog for clinical. My tennis shoes just weren't cutting it, so I got fitted for these. After about a week they become more comfortable and I can get them in all-white (per school's dress code). They cost an arm & a leg (to me, a poor nursing student) but if they save my feet, legs, and back from problems down the line I'll be happy. Plus, they can be re-corked & re-soled so they could conceivable last quite awhile (where I go through tennis shoes once a year or so). In our profession, I really think that we have to invest in some good shoes since we're on our feet so much. That's why I got these Birks and also a pair of Dansko Professional clogs to wear. Hopefully, its money well spent.

Hi everyone!
I'm not exactly sure which shoes I want to get when I start my clinicals.
I owned my first pair of birkenstocks in 5th grade and have been hooked ever since. I find them pretty comfortable and wear them all summer so I think they would naturally be a good choice for me (although I don't know as I've ever stood on them for 8+ hours-- I guess I'll see how comfortable they are then:D)
I was looking at the ones listed on allheart.com and I was torn between the open back "boston" style and the "london" that is entirely enclosed.

Does anyone have any personal advice or recommendations? Would having a back rub the heel is that why a lot of people wear open backed clogs? What would be the advantage of having a more fully enclosed "shoe?" Any advice or thoughts are appreciated.
