Biology instead of Chemistry?

Published

Woooo! SO many questions for you guys. BUT, I just spoke with my advisor, and she told me that I could take Survey of Biology I and II instead of Survery of Chemistry. Pros and cons of this decision? If I go with Bio, I'll actually be able to start this semester, but if Chemistry is absolutely crucial later on, then I'm not entirely sure what I should do. However, the program wouldn't give us this option if it didn't give us the information we need, right?

As long as you're *certain* that you'll be getting into that program then it's probably not an issue. The chem required for nursing is rudimentary and easily covered in a *good* biology class.

The risk is that if you apply to other programs then you may not be qualified without a specific chemistry class. This may apply for graduate programs down the road, as well.

I would also review the program's published requirements just to be sure. Advisors have been known to be incorrect regarding the details of nursing programs within their own colleges.

Thank you! I'm certain that I want to attend GSU's program... if I don't get in there, I'll reevaluate. The advisor said that we have a choice - Chem, Bio, or Physics, and that she can manually enter any of them in. Since Bio fits my schedule and the professor is excellent, it seems like I'll be benefitted most by taking that route.

Anyone else have any thoughts on this before I stop worrying about my schedule? I feel like it's a pretty solid first semester pre-req line-up (Biology I, Microbiology and Public Health, Stats, Intro to Math, and Gen Psych).

Biology isn't a prereq for micro at your school? That seems very strange to me. And Intro to Math isn't a prereq for statistics?

I would definitely take Biology instead of chemistry also. Chemistry should be covered within the first few weeks of Biology. It might be really hard if you don't have a chemistry background, but I knew people who did it without chem! Biology will be coming back time and time again in Human AP and Micro so I think it's more important to have that background. The big BUT is if you have to take the TEAS test. There is LOTS of chemistry on the TEAS and I found it very helpful to have taken the class. If you have to choose though, I would go with Bio.

My Fall line up is 13 hrs

AP1 -AP Lab,Elm Algebra,Eng1, Psych

I think your schedule is too much. It's 17 credit hours. Do you work as well? Doesn't each math class require 3 hours a week at the MILE? I think you should drop a math.

My college requires successful AP1 or biology before you can do microbio as well

Breezy.. ..my:twocents: .. drop one of the maths.. the Stats.. you risk slamming your GPA 11-13 hrs should be an easier pill to swallow.. Biology and Micro same semester?? get your pepto bismol ready just saying

Take both the bio and the chem - you'll be better prepared. Admittedly, my undergrad was in Molecular and Cellular Biology, so I'm a little biased.

Anyone who passed and understood high school mathematics up through Algebra II, if not Trigonometry, should have no problems with a 100-level stats class.
