Biology and chemistry pre-reqs

Published

First statement: eeww....!

Second statement: Where did you take these courses for the pre-req requirements? This is all I am lacking to be able to apply!! The only online one I can find forces me to start in August but that's when I wanted to be applying to school. What do you think?

I took mine at the local community college. There are lab elements required generally. Make sure that any versions you take will actually fulfill the requirements.

If you think Bio & Chem are "eeww!", what do you think the rest of nursing school is going to be like? You need to have a baseline understanding of Bio & Chem to go on to Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, etc. Those courses are the foundation for Med Surg. There's a reason why they're required.

If you're not strong in science, I wouldn't suggest taking your foundation courses online. Besides, both typically require a lab, which usually must be done on campus.

Good luck :)

Make sure before you sign up for an online class that you are not required to take a lab with those classes. Every school is different but all I needed for mine was high school level classes for those pre-reqs so I was able to take my chemistry through an adult education. school. I would talk to someone at the college to find out exactly what you need.

I agree with above posters: check with whichever school(s) you plan on applying to, and make sure that they will take online lab science courses. My ADN program will not; they require all lab sciences (A&P 1/2, chem, microbiology) to be taken in an on-campus format. They also required that the two A&Ps and Micro be taken in sequential order, so it was not possible to take less than 3 semesters to complete your science classes.

That's not how I meant that, I'm sorry. I was just joking because pre-reqs are a headache. I am actually pretty good in science but my high school courses for those were trash; I learned almost nothing.

Thanks for the replies, everybody! I didn't know that online might not be accepted. I'll talk to the school and see what I can do. FTR I like biology, chemistry....I guess... ;)

I took online biology in Ventura College .. the lab was required to be taken in campus ..

I just finished my chem pre req, so I get the eww. Pre reqs are a pain because you can't necessarily jump right into your nursing program like you may have thought. I did mine online and there was no lab requirement, but there was an in person final exam. Having said this - I'm sure rules will differ based on where you are and such, I'm in Toronto.

I personally took bio and chem on campus since I was already on campus for other courses. If you're planning on taking bio and chem online you have to consider if they have a lab component or not. You also have to take into account of whether or not the nursing program accepts prereqs that were taken online and if they also require a lab component too.

I also have two classes left to complete the required prerequisites for the almighty BSN. And yes, Chemistry is included and Nutrition. That will be all for me to get on my way. Having an open mind towards a course really do make it appear more interesting. Good luck to all of you in the same boat as I.
