Did anyone take 189(Lecture) ? Is it possible to pass this class?

Thank you Woogy. I definitely agree. Is it possible to flag a user, so you don't have to read their mean spirited comments? Aside from the occasional (Adam Henry) I usually get excellent advice on this site.

How ya doin' Checkmate? Just wanted to let you know that my friend struggled to figure out the instructor's style at first and by the time she figured it out was able to kick it into high gear and got an A overall.

Sistermike, I don't know what you have against CCSN but from your posts you are definitely insinuating that UNLV is much better. CCSN has a very good reputation--now you go ask anyone in the health field. I am a very smart student and by all means I didn't just arrive upon the grades I got. I find your posts very condescending. Do your research before posting your opinions. Nevada is one of the only states where the college courses at CCSN equivalate to those at NSC and UNLV which is why CCSN students can consider themselves lucky. Any graduating student with an Associates from CCSN is eligible to become a student in UNLV and that is not the case in many other states. Also just to let you know, it is not a "junior college" the Board of Regents along with CCSN are working to transform the "community" college into an actual "college" which will not just change the name to College of Southern Nevada but will allow for more funding and the addition of several Bachelor's programs. I am sure that many of the people at CCSN are capable and intelligent enough to get into UNLV but have husbands, wives, families, children and jobs they have to consider. Not everyone is in their early 20's with the time and money to be there.

Talk about making assumptions -- re-read your own post. First, I have nothing against CCSN and never did I imply so. Never did I speak about CCSN"s nursing program. I was simply speaking about pre-nursing classes at CCSN, or any community college. As I said before, CCSN pre-nursing classes are in no way less informational than classes at any other school; however I have never encountered a community college that isn't infested with grade inflation, and CCSN is no exception to that. There is obviously a correlation to the number of students who are pre-nursing at UNLV who opt to take courses at CCSN (especially A&P, chem, and microbiology). Reason being? It is much easier for them to achieve a higher grade because of grade inflation. They are in no way less prepared, as I stated before. And never ever did I attack CCSN's nursing program. Any accredited nursing program in the U.S. is most likely of equal difficulty and of equal in any other way.

So, your assumptions regarding my assumptions were obviously not correct.

Not everyone can afford to go to University so why put those who aren't fortunate enough to do so down? CCSN has a very good reputation--now you go ask anyone in the health field. I am going to play it safe and assume that most posters on all"nurses".com are nurses, or nurse hopefuls, not pre-med doctors. Furthermore, where have I ever been condescending to anyone? If you were referring to my orignal reply to the OP (regarding being able to pass any class), then I came off wrong.

What I was originally trying to portry to the original OP is that it is possible to pass someones class. The original question by the OP asked "if it was possible to pass" the class in question. Sure, my response was sort of "snappy", but it is because I have encountered and still am encountering so many students at the university/college level that need to truly do some growing up and maturing (both on the personality and professional level). People who continually try getting out of "hard" professors need to evaulate their goals as to being a nurse, because nursing school is no cakewalk, regardless of what school or what professor you have. Anyone has the ability to get an 'A' in a class, regardless of the professor; however, it takes hard work on one owns part, and that is what I was trying to portray to the OP.

And what exactly is "grade inflation" if you are now admitting that they are equivalent in difficulty. I don't know if you are aware that UNLV, NSC and CCSN have the same curriculum. You are able to graduate with a UNLV degree even if you took your A&P I, II, Micro, 189 at CCSN or NSC. If someone was registered at NSC and took 3 classes at UNLV, 2 classes at CCSN and the rest at NSC, he would still manage to get a degree from NSC--is this an example of grade inflation? If that was the case why wouldn't everyone do it? So to my understanding if you are agreeing that the classes are equally as difficult, your real implication is that the professors at CCSN illegally and immorally give someone who per se had a C an A? Because it's a "junior college" and all junior colleges are dishonest with their students and give them "fake" grades. I don't want to start a debate. Even if you respond. I won't read the post. It is very offensive to those of us who have worked our tails off to get this far to hear someone tell us we were given our grades by dishonest professors. Sistermike, we deserve the grades we worked hard for and maybe students do well in Community Colleges or Junior colleges simply because of smaller class size, ability to get to know classmates and start study groups....in no way are better grades an indication of a school lacking in actual academic evaluation. I just wanted anyone who reads this to know that CCSN is still and has been not only accredited, but does not tolerate dishonesty. If anyone is interested in the school, it is best that you personally do your own research and find if it best suits you. It is not a free ride and requires just as much hard work and focus as any other accredited school in the nation. Case and Point.

I am also wondering what grade inflation is. Most older students prefer to do classes at a CC for several reasons. One being the price, two being the accepting nature given to the "older" students. Sistermike has said that she is still encountering students at the univ that need to mature and grow up. My guess, and it is an educated one, is that those students that you are speaking of don't take their studies as seriously as others. That could be the reason for the lower grades. I know when I was in my very early 20's, I could care less about my grades. Now that I am older, and have life experiences that comes with age, I care soooooo much more about what I do with my life. I care more about getting the most out of every class since I'm paying for it. I know the difference because I lived both ends of this candle. I have never been given a grade I didn't deserve (well, except my only B, which I miss the A by 1/2 point:crying2: ). I have studied to the bitter end, and sometimes only barely scraped by getting that A. For the most part, I was only taking one, maybe two classes at a time at the CC and took 4 classes at UNLV during the summer. A's in all of them. No one fluffed my grade. Not at either school. At CCSN, in micro, the two students sitting next to me got through each test with C's. I never missed more than 3 questions on any given test. I ended up with a very high A, and they barely passed. It is NOTHING more than a grade you end up with for the work you put in to it. As a matter of fact, in A&P, a student told me she was failing and was going to retake the course at UNLV since she heard it was easier. Six of one, half-dozen of another.

No one should be attacking anyones school. Everyone gets the grades they worked for. Plain and simple.

Sistermike, please don't forget to let us know what you mean by "grade inflation". This information could help put this issue to rest.

I have taken classes at CCSN, Nevada State, and UNLV. I find UNLV the easiest for the sciences,then Nevada State, and CCSN was probably the hardest. CCSN is kinda of tough on the sciences. I looked on rate my professor before I took the classes and most students felt the same way. The other classes were pretty easy so I can't judge the difference between them. I'm taking classes this semester at Nevada State and CCSN. They all have been about the same. Now if I can just get thru math I will be ok.

i hear one of the instructors is pretty cool and laid back.. one of my friends had him for lab and lecture.. she liked him and got a A in the class..

Did anyone take 189(Lecture) with Joshua Parker? Is it possible to pass his class?

There is one that is probably one of the few ones at CSN that is going to make you sweat when you take 189, but it will be very rewarding when you take the rest of the Bio courses. Have something in mind, how well you do or how poorly it's entrirely up to you. An hour lecture is equal to 2 hours of study at home. Believe me, I took 189 from him and I worked really hard with him, but you have no idea how thankful i was afterwards when i took the rest of BIO courses. Also remember!the fact that he makes you work so hard is good, because it teaches you alot of discipline and if you wanna become a nurse... you are going to need a lot of that.

Okay...here is an HONEST answer to your question. Don't listen to some of the people in here. Bio 189 is a tough class. I took it 3 times before I passed. My other friends took it 2 times as well. Out of all the classes that I took for pre-nursing it was the hardest.

We put together a study group and also had some help through the Department of Retention on campus. They were really really helpful! The class always starts out big and ends up small. There are a limited number of seats in all the programs so they weed people out. Just DON'T GIVE UP! If I can do it so can you!!!
