i'm a 2nd year student and obviously all my cohort are worried about not being able to find a job when we finish. 1 of our tutors seems to be under the impression that there's gonna be huge numbers of retirement over the next 2 years- leaving the nhs short of nurses.
has anyone else heard this?? or is she just tryin to make us feel better :chair:

have heard a few quotes on this but don't think it is anything substantive, i believe the trusts will use this as a way to balance books and not replace nurses. think this was mentioned in the nursing times a while back

short staffed now and nobody gives a :monkeydance: :monkeydance:
best thing to do is get on the nursing bank and get yourself known to wards, then if a vacancy comes up you have a head start on the other applicants (there will probably be many)
good luck

I do not think things will improve. The NHS is being left to die intentionally. The government doesn't give a rat's ass. No one seems to understand that good nurse/patient ratios saves tons of money in the long run. They will be running the hospitals with 1 Nurse and 1 HCA to 3 or 4 wards before this is all over. I have lost count of the number of good nurses who have left and not been replaced.

there will be a huge problem in a few years as the old nurses like me.. decide to get out!! work force planning is interesting. If you look at general practice, the vast majority of nurses are in their late 40's or 50's. certainly within my last PCT we were concerned that we could lose up to half the practice nurse workforce over the next 10yrs.
so.. there should be some jobs for the young ones!! problem is in my job you need a fair bit of all round experiance before you go into practice nursing.. unless you really enjoy a vertical learning curve!!

i wouldn't mind a&e but i believe its hard to get a job there. is this true??
in my hospital they like you to have six months experiance, most go to the medical admissions ward for it
another thought, can you get onto the bank now as a hca, this will get your face known, thats what alot have done in my hospital

I know I have said this before and I am starting to feel a bit like a demented grandma repeating myself but this isn't the first time the NHS has been like this, when i qualified there were no jobs, wards were short staffed and the complaints were similar to what you are all expressing, but within a short time jobs started to be advertised and things did improve. The NHS seems to be cyclical so don't be too downhearted yet
I am going to find me zimmer now and hobble off to do my knitting
