3 Big Issues?

Hello fellow nurses,

Just a quick question. What are the 3 biggest issues you face (practice-wise) that really drive you crazy?

Thanks!

You first.

Yes, what she said ;)

Ok, I'll gladly go. Thanks! First, having to take care of more patients than I believe I'm safely able to. Second, the constant alarms (IV pumps, tele monitors, call lights, telephones ringing... you get the picture). And third, doctors when you call them on their cell phone, seems like it's always breaking up when they're giving orders. Ok, here's a fourth, irate family members who are disrespectful. SMH.

1) Rude, entitled patients and family members that take time away from dealing with real medical issues.

2) Short staffing and then being told it's poor time management

3) Lack of supplies. Need to insert a 16 French catheter? Can only find 6F. Wth?

Oh, and not being able to hear the overhead pages in the halls let alone patients rooms when a doc is trying to call me back about something serious. Drives. Me. Crazy!

1) Having to beg/borrow/steal supplies because we have run out (because the new materials ordering system they put in sucks)

2) Other units refusing to share supplies (which are charged to our unit, not theirs, so doesn't affect their budget) or worse, equipment that is meant to be shared with the rest of the hospital (such as the Tenor, which is kept on the bariatic surgery floor) isn't shared with the other units because apparently they are afraid we are going to sell the bloody thing on the black market.

3) Pt satisfaction scores. Sometimes, you just can't win. You can do everything for certain patients and they are still going to ding you because instead of giving them their 4mg Dilaudid (because your pain is always 10/10) you decided that calling a code on the patient in the next room is more important.

1) Constantly being short staffed. (I work third shift, we never have enough people).

2) Lack of communication between staff.

3) Cafeteria not being open when I'm at work. :cheeky:

I hate when they are understaffed and I agree to work my day off but when I'm working my regular shifts I get put on call for my last shift to prevent overtime. So I gave up my day off for nothing.

You first.

Thanks Farawyn!

Well, Matt, I'd have to say the three biggest Practice Issues I that I have to face are:

1.Balancing my breakfast tray, so it doesn't spill, in order to unlock the Psych Unit doors.

2.The reality that I am not King of the Universe. Heck! I'd settle for King of the World! Anyone want to nominate me? Anyone?

3.The Hospital doesn't come crumbling down every time I take a day off. Well, it does- but only in my dreams!

Thanks for asking, Matt. I feel as tough a real catharsis has taken place here!

Okay, Farawyn- your turn!
