i am watching Discovery Health's Baby Week and they are talking about big babies. a woman on here had a 12 lb. baby. and they seem astounded by it...my older brother weighed 12lb.10oz. and my grandmother gave birth to 8 babies that were all between 10-13 lbs and neither my mom or grandmother were obese or even overweight...but anyways, i never knew it was such a big deal!! maybe i am just used to hearing about it in my family where big babies are normal!! my question is...what is the biggest baby you've ever taken care of/helped deliver?

I gave birth to a 10 lb. 9 oz. son 19 years ago, and all I can say is that's why God invented the cesarean section!!

ooh goodness...14lb is the biggest i've ever heard of....his poor mother :o

my mother had a ceasarean with my brother because his head wouldnt fit through her pelvis haha...but my grandmother's were all lady partslly...which i dont see how she made it through!! i dont have children myself but i can imagine!!

I read somewhere that someone had a 15lb baby and the mom had to have a symphysiotomy and it had to be surgically corrected. Plus they had to have the bladder lifted after a hysterectomy.

So it wasnt an easy one...

Largest lady partsl birth I've seen was 13lb, 4oz. The mom was okay - 2nd degree tear, but the baby's humerus was badly fractured.

Biggest baby I've seen born on an intact perineum, 10lb 3oz, mom's 5th baby.

Women in my family tend to have larger babies - my son at 8+1 was a peanut in comparison to his 8+4, 9+14, and 9+3 cousins. Oh, and his 12lb uncle. I was a 9-pounder myself. Truly, most women's pelvises (pelvi?) can handle bigger babies than we think!

I had a 4'9" Mexican woman give birth to a baby who was 12lb. 8 oz. It ended up being one of the scariest shoulder dystocias I've ever seen.

Macrosomic babies can often be very sick, and women who give birth to them are more likely to develop type II diabetes later on.

Macrosomia (high blood sugars during pregnancy or gestational diabetes) can cause newborn to be significantly larger.

my mom had gestational diabetes with me, and i weighed 10lb, 14oz. but with my older sister (9lb.3oz.) and my older brother (12lb.10oz.), she didnt. that is crazy that a woman can carry such a large baby. its basically like having twins!!! my sister recently gave birth to my neice who was 9lb1oz........gosh i hope i get lucky and come out with a 6 or 7 lb.er!!!!!

Macrosomia doesn't mean high blood sugar during pregnancy; macrosomia simply means large baby (macro = large). It can be caused by different reasons, but most likely is caused by gestational diabetes (which can often be undiagnosed).
