Best Ways to Keep Alert?

Published

What are your best techniques for staying alert and functional when you have to study a lot and don't get a lot of sleep?

I have been using 5 hour energy shots and caffeine, but I know that's not very healthy. Is there really even a choice, or do you just get used to being a zombie?

I never said what 'enough' sleep was. I personally only sleep about 5 hours a night and am fine. Some need less some need more. I am only saying to moderate what you do. I have a fellow aide that works full-time takes 18 credit hours and has a kid and wonders why she is failing. Big wonder...

Understood. Just dont underestimate the benefits of a balanced nutritional approach.

About a year ago I used to go off of 4-5 hours of sleep, riding my bike 20 min 2x a day for 5 days and was eating healthier than I am now. The difference: I now eat fast food, get no exercise and sleep TONS. I think that even if you don't get as much sleep, the exercise helps you sleep better and the nutrition will aid in your exercising. My memory was MUCH MUCH better when I would exercise and eat better. I truely see and FEEL the difference. My lifestyle changed in the last year, and so did my memory. :sniff:

Bought a treadmill, so I am hoping I can get my health back in order and aid in reducing my stress. I wanted to add that, from personal experience, I agree with Bicsters advice.

Oh yes, I did not mean to minimize the importance of exercise and nutrition. Any of those out of balance wreaks havoc on the body and mind.

You are very wise! :jester:

eat right, and study like 30 min, and take a quick mental braeak then come back and concentrate again, drink green tea, and i personaly take ginki biloba and ginseng!

I take Ginkgo biloba as well. I'm not sure if it really helped me Ace my last semester, but I consider it my good luck charm.

I use the same pen for every test. I know that's why I got all A's. I will be crushed when I lose that pen.

Speed is why I am even in nursing school still. Well Adderall if you want to be technical. Nothing like a speed induced hypomania to make you ace classes. That isn't me joking either... :D

Whole point of medicine. Better living through chemistry. :w00t:

B vitamins and reminding yourself how badly you want to be a nurse...works for me every time. I think the B vitamins might just be a placebo effect but last year my A&P teacher told us that you can't make ATP without them, so I'm convinced if I load up I will have more energy!:D

Drink lots and lots of water...that way if you fall asleep on your books, eventually you will be forced to get up and walk around... :D...seriously though, keeping hydrated is really important for the brain.

Also, nourish those brain cells...can't surpass good, nutritious food...me personally, I'm a hemp, flax and sprout person...but it's not everyone's preference...find what works for you.

Coffee's good, but ya can't live on it alone!

I dearly love those pens too!!! They write so smooth and have a nice bold line. Unfortunately, I'm a lefty so the ink gets smudged all over the paper and my hand.:o
