Take care of yourself first (get enough sleep, drink plenty of water, etc.) Advocate for your patient. Never be afraid or ashamed to ask questions.

I keep a timer on my WOW so that I can set it when things are hectic so I don't forget a task. I also use it for the sweet patients that are lonely and want to talk. I set it to 3 minutes before I walk in the room and when it dings I tell them I have to go check on something. They never are offended that I have to leave.

Always be humble. Never think you know everything because it will bite you in the ass!!

Pee and eat when you can! Sometimes you have to do it all at once.

Specializes in ICU.

If your patient is yelling at you, FaceTiming, talking on the phone or eating a cheeseburger, they are REALLY NOT SHORT OF BREATH reguardless of what they say. Critical thinking, just say'n.

Only pick up overtime you WANT to work. Giving into the pressure to work excess amounts of overtime is a a recipe for burnout. Taking care of yourself is important for your own mental health and allows you to give better care to your patients.

Carry a small bag of nuts in your pocket for a little bit of protein throughout the day when you don't have time to eat.

If your questioning something especially a medication and you get stuck try bouncing off another nurse to see if they can help you see what your not see or your both seeing the same thing and in that case you'll have to call oncall because your patients safety comes first and you definitely don't want to give the wrong medicine or wrong dose.

Cover your ass because noone else will

Always interact with patients and other staff as if their loved one were watching over your shoulder.

If you think you need it, ask for help. Don't try to be a hero!

Tell patient's to hold their breath when swabbing for strep - less chance of a gag reflex. SO many patient's tell me I'm the best at it
