I used Carpenito's book my first year and never really liked it very much. Last year I found Mosby's Nursing Care Plans- Nursing Dx and Interventions -ISBN -0-323-01627-8. I helped me alot. I think it explains things alot better and includes more interventions and information.
We just had our reaccreditation and one of the main things that upset them was that we were doing care plans ... llllooooonnnnggg care plans. They states that the school should be teaching things that we will be doing in the "real world". So the school has to write a rebuttle on this to the committee.
When I write my care plans, I find a care plan book specific to the class that it pertains to (i.e. peds, maternity, med/surg). This really helped me to take it in the right direction.
I also held on to every care plan that I've written. They come in handy when you need the norms for a specific age group!!
In my school, we have to use the Ackley/Ladwig "Nursing Diagnosis Handbook, A Guide to Planning Care" religiously, quoting from it in most cases (depending on the clinical instructor at the time). At times I find it hard to find what I'm looking for in it so open the med/surg book, L&D book, etc. to get a feel for what I want and then look in the Ackley book to get my diagniosis.
I use Mosby's Nursing Care Plans Nursing Diagnosis and interventions. It never helped me out. It wasn't what my instructors were looking for at all. We too still do long care plans. I;m talking 20 plus hours to complete care plans, and even then they still don't have everything the instructors are looking for!
Yuck, care plans. In the real world of nursing, we have a big book of "canned" care plans that we pull out and place in the "Care Plan" part of the file so we don't get into trouble with the powers that be . . . however, we do not even read the dang things. What a complete waste of time and paper.
Just do what you have to do to get through school and then "forgetaboutit".
See the thread on "Where are the men" and look at some of Peeps McArthur's comments about curriculum.
