Hello,
I am a nursing student currently living in Minnesota. after graduation....about a year and a half....my husband and I would like to move to Florida. My heart has always been set on Tampa....big, but not too big....low cost of living....right by the water...and of course....hot as he** (which is sooo much better than freezing my buns off for six months of the year)
This spring, he and I will be visiting his grandmother in Sarasota to check out the area, and look into things.
Can anyone tell me about some of the cities...Jacksonville, Tallahassee, Pensacola, etc......the good, the bad....good hospitals, etc. Any information and bragging would be greatly appreciated.:kiss
I would also be interested in making pen pals, and maybe meet some of you when I come out in the spring.
Thank you lots and lots!!
Lisa
I lived in FL for 6 years and LOVED it, I've been trying to get my husband to move there with me, we live just outside Boston now. Tampa, St. Pete, Sarasota, Jacksonville all are nice areas, the have enough to keep you busy. Jacksonville is nice if you still want a change of seasons.
I loved Orlando! There is def. more there than just the mouse. The houses are still affordable, a lot to do, good hospitals (although I'm just a nursing student now so I don't know what the jobs are like)
Good luck with your decision!
Yes the pay is less in teh south compared to the north..but nobody has mentioned the fact that Florida DOES NOT have a state income tax.. there fore it really offsets the difference in pay scales. The cost of living is definately less, because half of the year, you dont need air conditioning.. and only need heat for like 2 months out of the year.
Good luck in your search.
Actually, as former native Floridian, the income tax thing doesn't matter all that much. I would still live farther up North, pay state (and sometimes city) income tax and get decent pay and conditions. I still made out better up North than in Florida.
Actually, I have never needed heat here...an extra blanket will do.. and the air is on probably 9 monthes in central Florida.
You get what you pay for. Instead of a state income tax.. the money is still collected or not spent. You will either pay it as property/sales taxes or have lousy schools and poor infrastructure. In Polk County , we have both, along with the bad pay.
Not to mention mosquitoes, hurricanes, and skin cancer.

:chuckle is there anyone out there who can advise me on florida life. I have been working in a major hospital in Michigan for a year and a half.We hate the winters and cold weather. I have to move to the ft meyers area with my wonderful spouse and want to know what to expect. I have no idea on where to work that is my best opportunity for pay and benefits, housing and schools. Anyone in that area that can advise me. thanks,BSRN that wants a nice life

We are moving to Lakeland FL the end of May 05. I am looking for a contact person who works at LRMC. Anyone out there who works for this hospital in Lakeland? I have visited their website and it looks like a pretty big hospital? Any knowledge of salaries there? Sheila

I can tell you about Jacksonville, which is where my brother lived and i stayed with him long enough to tell you that it is beautiful; plenty of nursing oportunities. as any thing else there are poor areas. other wise i visited beautiful quiet housing areas like Capper rd. off of Lem Turner where i stayed. there ic a community college on that rd.to me it is beautiful. i would have stayed there but for other personal reasons moved to Orlando.
orlando is beautiful. all major attractions are here. Disney, universal, wet 7 wild; it is a lovely place to be and fairly safe. again it is the type of area you choose to stay. there are lots of healt care facilities from major hospitals to private offices; you can' loose. i am here for the past 3 yrs so if you need more information re hospitals etc. just contact me. bye.
Hi Cheryl! Yep, I'm thinking that Altamonte Springs would be just right for my family. If we decide to move again in the near future, I think I'll have a fair chance of reselling a condo. Everyone says we'll be coming back in a couple of years.I've been getting more negative feedback than positive when I tell folks that I want to move. ( It might be that they enjoy working with me and hate to lose another nurse. Or maybe they had bad experiences.. )
Hi! I work in Altamonte if you want information on the hospital. I'd be happy to tell you about my job. I don't live in the Altamonte area--I live one county away, but any info you need I'd be happy to help...

Lisa, I recently saw an article in US News and World Report about the top 100 hospitals in the US and Sarasota Memorial Hospital kept showing up on many of their lists, go to USnews.com and check it out. I almost went to work there after I graduated but met a man and married him and stayed on the east coast. Melbourne is a nice city on the east coast, look into it and if you are interested in this side of the state contact me at [email protected] I am a recruiter for a local travel and perdiem company, we also place nurses at University Community Hospital in Tampa. Let me know if I can be of any help to you.

I am a new grad--training in the MICU in Toledo ohio. We want to move soon--tired of the cold weather. We have family in Jacksonville that love it there. What is the nursing situation? Pay, benefits, working conditions?Thanks-
There are several hospitals in the Jacksonville area, you know the city limits are the county limits, its one of the largest cities land mass wise in the US. We have travel contracts in Jacksonville at the Baptist Hospital System, there are 5 hospitals, one is a Women's and Childrens facility. They have had needs for Cardiac ICU, ER, OR, if you want more info contact me at [email protected]

Interesting replys here/ I am in Ocala. Ocala is pretty boring but we have 4 hospitals here now. Marion county has some beautiful horse farms if you like that sorta thing. I live in the city, close to everything. It is pretty quiet here most of the time.
