Best Florida city?

Published

Hello,

I am a nursing student currently living in Minnesota. after graduation....about a year and a half....my husband and I would like to move to Florida. My heart has always been set on Tampa....big, but not too big....low cost of living....right by the water...and of course....hot as he** (which is sooo much better than freezing my buns off for six months of the year)

This spring, he and I will be visiting his grandmother in Sarasota to check out the area, and look into things.

Can anyone tell me about some of the cities...Jacksonville, Tallahassee, Pensacola, etc......the good, the bad....good hospitals, etc. Any information and bragging would be greatly appreciated.:kiss

I would also be interested in making pen pals, and maybe meet some of you when I come out in the spring.:D

Thank you lots and lots!!

Lisa

Moving to Boynton Beach, anyone know the payrate for highly experienced RN (>15 yrs) and any good hospitals in the area?

Specializes in Psych, Correctional, LTC and Rehab.

I grew up in PA and let me tell you that Tallahassee is nicer than Harrisburg...

I live outside of Gainesville in the Winter...good area for decent health care...

There isn't one

I think Miami is the best Florida city. There's so much going on all the time and there's so much to do. There are many hospitals to choose from. The cost of living is rising but that's the only con that Miami has.

Specializes in Long term care, psychiatric.

I live in St. Petersburg, FL. We have 9 hospitals and 32 nursing homes here plus other facilities so plenty of places for nurses to work. We are right next to Tampa, just a bridge separating us. Tampa also has a few hospitals. We are between the Gulf of Mexico and Tampa Bay so planty of places to enjoy the water on your time off from work. Check it out.

Specializes in Hospice, OR, Home Health, Orthopedics.

I lived in Tallahassee in the late 80's, moved back to Georgia in 1990. I would have stayed gladly in Florida, I love almost everything about it. I thought Tallahassee was a beautiful easy to navigate city. Minutes from Panama City Beach and the flowers in the spring were breath taking. I vacationed with my family every year in Daytona Beach Florida and I would love to own a condo there. I have heard that the prices have gone up greatly though and I've also heard the taxes are terrible.

I will probably end up retiring in Tampa St Pete because that is where my husband was raised. He went to Dixie High School.

Well good luck choosing.

Yes, Jacksonville has a lots of places to go I lived there for years.......and now I regret the move i have made. I m now in pensacola, fla beautiful place...........but jobs the pits................ Miss Jax. MartRN

I love it here in Jacksonville, lots of opportunities for the advancement of nursing career. Plus I love the slower pace here compared to other big cities, but still there are a lot of things to do here that you won't get bored.

:welcome: to Jacksonville!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but there is nowhere you can go in the USA and not see right wing conservatives, religious zealots, pickup trucks, or Confederate flags. We happen to live in the greatest country ever to exist partly because we are free to live in peace with whatever belief we desire. You are not going to like everybody and not everybody is going to like you. Your family will be better served if you teach them to accept the diversity of others. It is impractical to run and hide from those who believe differently than you. There will always be people who have different political ideas, different ways to worship, different vehicle preferences, and different ideas as to the arrangement of the red, white, and blue of their flag.

God Bless.

True, but per capita....I've never experienced such saturation. The reason I want to get my kids OUT of here is so they CAN live in a diverse community where all people and religions are accepted. The racism and " if you dont accept our beliefs your going to hell" mentality here is backwoods. I have lived in the Midwest, West Coast, Pacific Northwest, and New England. Trust me, this is not the place to be if you want to raise open minded children. We can teach it at home, but once your kids get "out there", they are easily influenced by peers.

BTW--MANY people see the confederate flag= racism. I am one of them

Personally, I LOVE Jacksonville. I was conceived and raised there. Born in Georgia, but that's another story :uhoh3: . Pardon my bias. Maybe if you live on the Westside or Northside I can understand how you might have encountered some folks with some backwoods thinking. Most of the city is not that way though.

As far as the Confederate flag goes, it's unfortunate that some people equate it with racism. Unfortunate also is the fact that some racist groups have adopted the Confederate flag as their symbol, and it pains me to see that. But those same groups use the American flag too. The argument as to why the Civil War was fought in the first place influences the beliefs of many. If you ask the participants of any war why they are fighting it you will get many different answers, including the current war in Iraq. Robert E. Lee had a different view of the reasons for the Civil War than Alexander Stephens. Sometimes those beliefs change over time, with Ulysses S. Grant as an example, whose justification for the war varied from his earlier writings to his postwar memoirs. It is an old argument, and much time is expended on it, with little result. People are going to believe what they want to believe. As for me, the Confederate flag is an honorable symbol of the sacrifices, service, and commitment of those members of my family in the name of Southern Nationalism. The Confederate flag is as dear to me as the American flag, and I will defend both all the way.

Yeah, I don't know. I'm glad you are happy here. I plan on moving soon, so I will be happy then too! LOL!

As far as locale, I have found it everywhere. I live in OP, work in Jax, and attend school at UNF.

An example of what I mean as backwoods might be something like--I am in an SCIENCE based curriculum , yet the students (some) believe that men have one less rib than woman b/c adam handed over one to create woman...or how about my favorite --that people lived to be 969 years old just 5k years ago. Sigh--this is just a few examples of the astounding "backwoods mentality" I encounter in Northern Florida all the time. I mean if science based students (all with a 3.5 GPA or better) believe this stuff....

Also, there is no separation of church and state. My kids elementary teachers have posters about Jesus in the classroom (wonder how that Jewish kid feels?) and MY professors openly discuss their religion and belief system during lectures.

As far as the civil war goes...I think that the many different views on the actual purpose of the war boil down to economics..freeing the slaves would have ruined the economy of the south and since slaves were not valued as humans..the confederates fought to retain their wealth (i.e: slaves). Oversimplified? Maybe...but what I believe is the message behind that flag.

I realize I am ultra-sensitive and on defense mode here, but I feel like a fish out of water in this community and it makes me very uncomfortable.

I dont mean to say that ALL people are like this, Im just saying I have never encountered this is such concentration as I have since I moved to the South
