Join your school nurses association (http://www.nasn.org/Default.aspx?tabid=60 ) , find out if they have an orientation, find a mentor either in your district or at a neighboring one, get some good books, the school nurse textbook by Selekman and the school nurse legal book by Schwab.

Make friends with the secretaries!

Good luck!!

That IS GREAT advice! At my school, when I started about 7 years ago, the principal, (MENTALLY UNSTABLE) told me on my first day that the secretary was going to make my life miserable. She stated that the secretary had even told her this! As a new staffperson, I was quite paranoid, as you can imagine. :chair: This DID lead to my having problems with the secretary, of course. Then, after that principal finally retired, the secretary and I got to talking... The principal had told HER to watch out for ME!! Needless to say, we both were very happy that this principal is now gone, and is no longer stirring up fireworks, (her specialty) and we can just do our jobs. We now get along very well, I am happy to say! ;)

Yes, AND your local EMTs. I don't have to call 911 very often but when I do I know that "my" guys are going to come running. I take them homemade cookies from time to time to sweeten the deal.:p

I have an interview in two days. If I get the position this will be my first job as a nurse. I am super nervous, but I have heard nothing but positive things about being a school nurse. ANY ADVICE is much needed...not counting my chickens before they hatch/just trying to be prepared :)

School nurses in NY are living in terror that they will be cut from the state budget! I swear, I use them EVERY DAY.

And make friends with the custodians and maintenance people too! If ya got a kid who has puked everywhere, they are the ones you call for a clean up. I keep mine happy, happy, happy!
