Besides BSN what degrees couple nicely with an ADN?

Law for Legal Nursing, Chemistry if you think you might want to work in a lab one day, business if you think you might want to work for a drug company, education for perhaps a future in patient education. What kind of nursing are you interested in pursuing?

I'm not sure. Seems like I need to research.

I have a business background. But Law seems very interesting to me.

Legal nursing is pretty interesting, in NY and a lot of other major cities(I see you're from Chicago) lawyers hire nurses as consultants when they are working on medically related cases. So if you were hired you might be consulted as to how you would rate the charting and care the pt received, you might have to summarize care and so they want someone knowledgable with med terminology. Sometimes nurses are brought into court, sometimes they need you to do investigative work... it really depends on what firm, what case etc.

With a business background, you are much more marketable for positions with drug companies if you ever wanted to do drug research, community education for new drugs or be a drug rep. You would also be desired by medical supply companies, who better to talk to hospital admins about their needs then a nurse who happens to also be very familiar with equipment costs and options. Also if you like being creative there's always drug marketing and advertising which a business degree would really help with. I'm rambling, I guess you have to figure out what exactly interests you or maybe get a few ideas and see which degree some of them have in common?

The major I would choose if not nursing is forensic science.

So if I wanted to be a social worker and a nurse I could do that? After I get my Adn would I then get a BA in social work? If so that's cool; didn't know it was possible but would love to do it if it is possible.

You wouldn't be able to finish the social work degree in just one year.....and keep in mind that most positions in that area require a MSW. Why don't you just finish up your BA in what ever will take you the least amount of classwork to do. What were you getting it in before?

Plus, I don't know of too many facilities that would want an RN and MSW all roled into one. You would either be hired for one job or the other.

No I didn't mean to imply that I thought I could do it in one year. I was just thinking that I might just do the lpn program, see how I fit into nursing and then depending on certain things either go for my adn or switch to a degree in social work. I'm torn between both fields of work...lol Thanks for the info though:)

You would be way ahead by picking up your BA degree first then doing just a program for nurses that already have a degree. You would be able to get your RN in not much longer time than it would take you to do the requirements for your LPN. Then if you wanted to do anything else, you would have RN behind your name instead. Would also open many more doors to you if you wanted to work outside of the country, especially if you are interested in social work also. You could be finishing up your degree while you are waiting to get into nursing school.

I actually did the same thing and that was a long time ago. :balloons:

Thanks Suzanne:) Since I've already been accepted to this nursing program though I feel I should go ahead and do it first. Plus I really need to start working and make some money asap...I appreciate the info:)

That is great.............you made it sound like you had a year before you were going to start your program.....................that is why I told you to finish your degree up as quickly as possible.
