Bergen Community College Nursing Program Question

Published

Last Thursday I was at the college for the purpose of collecting my Chemistry grade with some classmates. Apparently, there was a graduation ceremony for RN's going on that night as well, and my friends started talking to one student to ask her about the program. I didn't hear the entire conversation, but one of my cohorts told me the student had stated that ELEVEN people had failed out of NUR-181 alone during her course!

Now, there's always a chance there was some sort of misunderstanding or miscommunication, but does this sound right? For what it's worth, I would think the application process and competitiveness of getting in to the program would assure a strong student population, so it makes me nervous to hear these things. I already received some insight from someone privately, but I was wondering what the public population made of this info.

Thanks!

Hi DaddyO and all the nursing students at BCC,

I just took my Hesi and I only scored a cumulative of 82. I was wondering if you know if BCC would consider my score. I have a 4.0 gpa. I'm really worried about it.

I'm a new Fall student....no problems on our end:uhoh3: as much as just OVERWHELMED and no time to keep up with everything on here!!!

Hey guys. I have been answering private messages from a lot of people with questions regarding the HESI. I am more than happy to help, but for the sake of time, please check my previous posts by clicking on my name and leafing threw them. I have about three posts written about the HESI exam, really long and detailed descriptions. If there is something you would like to know that is NOT on there, I would be more than happy to help you guys and answer your questions the best that I can. Best of luck to all of you! See you in the Spring;)

Good idea Moojie!! I have tons of posts that might be a goo reference too.

For those of you who are about to take the test, here is a post I posted right after I took it that reflects my opinion of the material covered::

I actually have to disagree with most of the posts on this subject and say that I definitely think the study guide helped! Well, it wasn't all that helpful on the sciences (Biology and Chemistry that is-- I did NOT have to take A&P section)...I actually studied all my notes and flash cards from my Chem class (which I just took last fall) and as much biology I could find from my A&P notes/flash cards, IN ADDITION to the study guide's science sections. I felt like these 2 sections were really the only difficult portions on the exam. I scored an 84% on both and there were only 33 questions (or so) for each. I wanted to mention this first because I was NOT HAPPY when I left because I really felt like I had studied enough to do much better on the sciences...but don't fret, I think I was just getting tired (left the sciences for last since I felt I as most prepared for them) and was annoyed that the questions weren't the ones I had hoped they would ask ;)

As for the Reading and Comprehension - I felt like it was VERY similar to the study guide. I was nervous about this part before I took the test too actually, mainly because it is unpredictable. I can't remember specific examples other than reconfirming that the format is just like what is in the guide...each reading passage is about 2-4 paragraphs (short paragraphs, like 5 or so sentences) and you don't have to memorize them, after you answer the first question for the passage another one will pop up under the passage so you can reference the material for each answer. The grade is based on "subsections", for example, I received a 100% on "Meaning and word use" but scored an 86% on "Conclusions"...there are 4 of these subcategories, my over-all Reading and Comprehension score was a 93.5%.

Vocabulary was just like the study guide. I went so far as to study medical terminology to make sure I was over prepared and I could have spent that time on the sciences!! Several of my Vocabulary words were also used in the Reading and comprehension section, so I had already read them in a sentence which was helpful in a few instances. But I think if you study the vocab in the guide you will be well prepared...there are obviously a few that weren't in the study guide but nothing crazy. Try not to worry too much about this section.

Grammar was the EASIEST section! This is JUST like the study guide. My version of the test did not ask me to dissect a sentence and identify sentences parts (like the predicate, predicate nominative, etc.), which was something I was super nervous about for some reason!! They might ask those questions on other versions but not on mine. Say the sentence to yourself and if you are unsure, go with what "sounds" right.

I was a nervous wreck before I took the test, so I know how you feel. This is a good thing because you know you won't slack on your preparation!! Like I said at the beginning, the only sections that I struggled with were Bio and Chem, I didn't personally like the way some of the questions were worded...but I think any class you take relies heavily on the instructor and how they teach you the material - because of that I think I was thrown off by the way the questions were asked. This is not to say that you will feel the same, you may very well find the sciences to be a breeze, several people on here did!!

My main word of advise, of course I am A.D.D. and HATE to sit still, is to take short breaks. I mean VERY short breaks, to be sure you don't lose any time I would get right back at it. I only took one break, to run to the restroom and back, and it really helped me "reboot". I finished with maybe 30 or so minutes left to spare (of the 4 hours) and had I known that I would have a little time left I would have taken at least one other quick breather. I did go very slow thru the test tho, on purpose, to make sure I really thought about each question cause I tend to jump to conclusions and miss the easiest questions because of it (did I mention I have A.D.D.?!;)).

If you have studied, and continue to until you go for the test, you really should be fine. I got an over-all score of a 91.25% and so far the average (for everyone who has taken the test as of today) is a 69%.

TO ALL THE NURSING STUDENTS ALREADY IN THE PROGRAM:

when do they start sending out acceptance letters? I believe the last day to take the hesi exam for the evening program is the 15th of november. do we find out right after after this date? I read a post that you can check on your webadvisor under program evaluation if it says a.a. nursing day/evening. mine already says a.a. nursing day AND a.a. nursing evening because I had applied to the day program before but i couldnt take the hesi exam. So I'm assuming that post was not correct?

hmmm...that's instersting. I don't know why it would say that (both of them). I would call BCC and ask about that. Also, I don't know how they handle the acceptance letters for the evening program because you all only have a month or so break between semesters...the last ppl took the test around May 25th and our letters came in around the 1st or 2nd week of June....but I'd imagine that if the cutoff date is 15th then yall should know before the end of the semester...?

I am in the evening program. the system showed i was accepted on 12/01. Letter came about 1wk or so after.

RN NURS.EVE Admitted 12/01/08 2009SP

You were accepted and have to apply all over again ?

Hello everyone!! Congrats to those who have made it into the program and thank you for providing us applicants with helpful suggestions and information! Newstart85, we are in the same boat. I took the HESI yesterday and I'm feeling very anxious!!

I was wondering if anyone knows if our GPA is factored in the decision making? I transferred to Bergen this Summer. I took a summer class and I'm currently enrolled for the Fall2010. I'm convinced that since I didn't take my pre-req's at Bergen, it's going to decreased my chances of getting into the evening program. Right now I have a 4.0 GPA but it's only for one class. All my other classes were transferred. Des anyone know if they prefer accepting students that have been at Bergen for 1+ years versus a newly transferred student? I think I'm just paranoid lol

Hi Gabby820,

From the posts I've read, it seems like they don't take our GPA into consideration, just our Hesi scores. How'd you do on the Hesi? I'm just waiting until they send out acceptance letters.

Hi DaddyO,

I was never accepted before, I only applied. I applied to the evening program and took the Hesi and now I am just waiting for the results.

Hey Newstart85,

I got an overall 86% I'm no confident in my score at all. At one point I was so bored I just started clicking answers without really considering the options!! (I know, bad idea) But I snapped out of it and began focusing again. After Nov 15th I'm going to log on the webadvisor every MINUTE to check my admission status! lol

Good Luck :)

Hey Newstart85!

You can check admission status on webadvisor but not under program evaluation. Mine also says A.A.S-Nursing Evening but I don't think it means we're in. After you log on to webadvisor, click on "prospective student" not "current student" Then click on admission status. Mine says "ready to test" Which just means our application has been accepted and we are eligible to take the HESI. If you're accepted it will say "admitted" I guess after November 15th you can start checking what your status is.
