Bergen Community College Nursing Program Question

Published

Last Thursday I was at the college for the purpose of collecting my Chemistry grade with some classmates. Apparently, there was a graduation ceremony for RN's going on that night as well, and my friends started talking to one student to ask her about the program. I didn't hear the entire conversation, but one of my cohorts told me the student had stated that ELEVEN people had failed out of NUR-181 alone during her course!

Now, there's always a chance there was some sort of misunderstanding or miscommunication, but does this sound right? For what it's worth, I would think the application process and competitiveness of getting in to the program would assure a strong student population, so it makes me nervous to hear these things. I already received some insight from someone privately, but I was wondering what the public population made of this info.

Thanks!

Fisherman- do you recommend anything we should start reading first?

Hi, I just got home after working a 13 hr shift, but I will check my books tomorrow and see what chapters you should start on reading. I would suggest reading your pharmacology book's first 10 chapters. This is a self taught course, not enough class time devoted to this subject ( only once a week for about an hour )..start memorizing the abbrev. b.i.d., t.i.d., ...ok..gtg, back to work in 8 hrs..FishermanIV

Speaking of Pharmacology and the abbreviations....

brush up on your simple Algebra. Everyone is required to take a Pharmacology test. I believe it was within 2-3wks of the start of the semester. This test is given for every level..(not sure about Level 4), but I did have to take for Levels 2 and 3. Minimum passing grade is 80. only 10 questions....but it is a must that you pass this. If you don't pass, you cant administer meds in the hospital. You are given more than 1 opportunity to pass.

Example: This was giving to me by a good friend....

Lets see. Its been such a long time since a level 1 pharm exam. If I remember correctly, you will see a couple that will be easy like the following:

Ordered: Cipro 500mg PO or Ordered: Maalox 30cc PO Stat

On hand: Cipro 250mg/tab Available: Maalox 1 tablespoon

How many tabs? Answer is 2 How much would you give? Answer 2 tablespoons

(500/250=2) (1 tablespoon=15cc so 30cc/15=2)

You may also see more conversion type questions like this:

Ordered: Go-Lytely 1.2 liters

On hand: 8 oz cup

How much would you give?

OK, you will need to know that there are 30ml in an ounce. That means that since you have an 8 ounce cup, that each cup will hold 240ml (8 x 30=240), now you would need to know that 1 liter is 1000ml, so if you have 1.2 liters that is going to be 1200ml. Now all that is left to do is divide 1200 by 240 and your answer is 5 cups:

You should also see some injection question like this:

Ordered: Garamycin 60mg IM

On hand: Garamycin 80mg/cc

Ans: 75cc

hey... yeah a lot of us (ME TOO) are in section 001.

At my CPR course, i actually met a couple of other girls who will be in our program, they were 003. it was nice to meet them though, i enjoyed our time.

anyway, i took out a loan which will include my payments for books, but they are telling me i can't get my books yet until september... ughhh how annoying!!! but the point of me taking a loan out was so i wouldn't have to spend my own money which i don't have right now, therefore i'm not buying them with my cash so i have to wait.

i did however, get my pharmacology book, i got the previous edition- it isn't the newest one. I've been studying the first four chapters of that, and plan to do the first 10 before school.

I am going to suggest to give priority to the reading for NUR 183 (6 credits) . The first exam we took covered something like 20 chapters. I am in the evening program and it was darn near impossible for me to do all that reading...review the notes...and then go over NCLEX questions to prepare.

Yes....NCLEX questions are necessary in preparing for the exam....but coupled with the lecture notes.

Hiii

Thanks for all the tips.

I'm totally scared to begin reading all of this. :(

Oh well... Have a good weekend everyone.

its intimidating in the beginning....but you will find your groove and be fine. Just try not to fall behind and group yourself with others that are as motivated as yourself, so you guyz can give each other a push every now and then.

study the Pharm questions i gave you.....at least 1/4 of the class failed the exam the first g round. It gets stressful taking it a second time because of the consequences.

The initial Pharm test is not part of your grade...it just allows one to administer meds...or not.

Hey Everyone!

For all of you that have experience with student loans at Bergen, I was wondering if you could help me understand some things =) I just received my award letter and so after I pay off my tuition and purchase my books (which they say I HAVE to purchase at the BCC bookstore if using those funds -- is that true?!) what happens with the remaining funds?! Does the school release the remaining balance to me? How does it work?!?!?!

I think we should receive extra credit for navigating the ever elusive Financial Aid office....why do those people get paid anyway?! They don't tell you ANY thing!! Grrr......

Thanks everyone!!

Hey--

UKgirl- sorry I can't help you out- I know nothing about financial aid.

However, I did notice that the syllabuses were listed online...
