Bellevue College 2011 hopefuls

Thought I would put this thread up for those of us who have applied to BC RN program.

I know we won't find out until mid-April if we made it or not, but how did everyone do on the TEAS test???? I have heard alot of horror stories about test scores.

Bandaide, how are you liking the program? It has been difficult for me to ascertain which programs are good so I want to ask someone who is going through the experience right now. I also applied to Seattle Central and Highline, I think Bellevue is my first choice right now but I really don't know how to compare the different programs.

I really like it. I find the instructors to be supportive, and there is no feeling that they are trying to weed people out. We are given lots of resources to help us - more than we would ever have time to use them all. It seems to be easier for some of us than others, but I think that those who learn easily with the critical thinking model do well. If your learning style is memorizing lists of stuff, it will be harder. The first quarter (Fundamentals of Nursing)is pretty overwhelming. There is so much to read, that it will pretty much be all you can do to keep up. It gets better second quarter (Med-Surg I) but that might just be because we've started to adapt. Care plans take forever - they are really not my favorite thing! I really enjoy clinical, and though my instructors so far are supposed to be "hard", I felt that they were fair and very patient. There are many chances to improve in areas where you have problems, but if you won't/can't improve, you could be either taking a quarter off or out of the program.

Your attitude is important. Be positive. Those who want changes in the program to suit themselves as to schedule, assignments, clinical placements, etc. are going to have a problem. They are pretty clear with all that upfront, so know going in if it works for you or not. Many people work, but the program will not change to accomodate your schedule. Whining about other instructors or students is not appreciated by the faculty. If you have an issue, take it up with that person. Some student are not used to getting grades below an A, and have expressed that they aren't getting 'what they deserve'. Reality is that nursing school is harder in many ways - suck it up.

The vast majority of my class is doing well and appear to be happy. We're definitely learning a lot, and it is mostly a fun, time-consuming trip. It's not perfect, but nothing ever is. I'm enjoying it and feel that I've gotten more than my money's worth.

Good Luck, and maybe I'll see you at new student orientation!

Thanks for sharing Bandaide! Very helpful info.

Would you mind sharing your general schedule? How many clinicals per week, and what the hours are like, if you don't mind? I tried asking the nursing dept but they would only give me really vague answers.

The schedule varies from week to week, depending on what needs to be covered, staff availability (most instructors are working nurses), clinical site availability, etc.

IN the first quarter, count on having at least one lecture and one skills class per week. Once your clinicals start (two consecutive days per week, starting somewhere betweeen 6:45-7:15 depending on the facility and runnning until 3:30. Evening clinical runs from around 2:30-3 to 11. You don't get a choice.) there is one lecture (usually Monday for us) and one skills class (day depends on which clinical group you're in), with skills testing days thrown in there too. If you're planning to work, go for the weekends as during the weekdays, no two weeks are the same. I would advise scheduling in your study time as well. After the second quarter, it seems that there are fewer skills classes and lecture has stayed on Mondays so my schedule is more predictable. Yes, you will live and die by your calendar!

Thank you so much! I guess that's why the department can't really give solid answers :)

Bandaide,

Thank you so much for the info!! It's nice to have some idea of what life will be like during nursing school!

No problem. I'm happy to help, so just ask if you have questions and I'll do my best to answer.

Hi there,

I received an email from one of the counselors at Bellevue stating that the average getting in this year will have received 84% to 86% on their TEAS Exam (so the cutoff will probably be an 82%). Has anyone else heard this? I also was informed that the counselor who is sending out the acceptance letters is out until the middle of this week and we will not receive them until the following week.... I just want to make sure that I getting the correct information.

what a bad time for a vacation! at least i will not be waiting by the mail for the rest of the week.

those #'s sound similar to last years so i would bet they are right, especially if they were emailed from someone at Bellevue.

Nursing departement said they do not have any data and they did not give out such info yet, bellevuequestions, May I ask you where you get that info from?
