This is not nearly as serious as it sounds
I work acute pysch and the other day I was working in the high care area where patients may go if they are pyschotic/manic and needing a low stimulus area. And its often a step down process if they started their admission in seclusion
Anyhow, our patient was on a smoking regime. That is they only got a cigarette once an hour due to the mania they had a tendency to smoke them all at once and then complain they had none left.
I was floating from my home ward and I tended to be a bit sort of 'mehh' but wanting to support my colleagues I adhered to the plan they had developed because not my place. The patient understandably was not happy and began yelling at me "I'm going to sue you, I'm going to sue you for defamation". I had to retreat into the office at that point, mainly because I thought laughing at the patient would be non therapeutic.
Throughout the rest of the shift the patient would continue to mutter and periodiacally yell at me that he would see me in court and I should be terrifyed. All I could think of was the princess bride. It still makes me giggle

Nahhhhh. Just a gramma of two very troubled young ladies who were severely neglected and abused as young girls. My daughter took these sweethearts into her home and fostered them not knowing what was ahead. They couldn't read a clock at the ages of 13 and 11. They didn't know how to use eating utensils because they were fed like dogs on the floor....in a bowl. They have been in and out of the hospital where my daughter is almost always blamed for their behavior that includes suicide attempts and situations where my daughter's actual safety is jeopardy because they have been angry and a threat to her physically.
These girls have been in and out of the hospital MULTIPLE, MULTIPLE times. One is currently in the hospital awaiting a residential placement for the umpteenth time, the other has been placed in a long-term treatment facility more than 800 miles away. This is not the first time she has been away from home....she spent a year 3 states away for a year about 3 years ago. We don't think that she will ever be able to live a normal life outside of a therapeutic environment. And these types of places just DO NOT exist. And so they send them home to my daughter.
The abuse these kids ( who are adults now and treatment is SO EFFING much harder to find) suffered changed their brain Chemistry. Abuse causes brain damage.
I am so sorry if I don't find jokes about psych patients funny. The way that mental health is treated is a joke, I find it disgusting that suppossed professional nurses make jokes. They are not suffering through life for anyone's pleasure.
I just implore nurses to NOT make fun of this chit.
vir·tue sig·nal·ing
noun
the action or practice of publicly expressing opinions or sentiments intended to demonstrate one's good character or the moral correctness of one's position on a particular issue.
"it's noticeable how often virtue signaling consists of saying you hate things"
Just p*ss off.

I am sorry for the horror story you just described. Psych nurses see these horror stories playing out every day. We know there is a paucity of decent places where people can get long term help. People are dumped in acute psych units that are ill-equipped to provide what they really need.
Gallows humour is one way of being able to work in an area most nurses don't relish. Sometimes it doesn't sound very appropriate; sometimes it strikes a nerve. Hopefully this site provides a safe space where we can relax a bit. I'm pretty sure anyone on here can empathize with your family's situation and would not wish to add to your pain.
Blessed be.

You come into a thread meant in humour to express your belief about what appalling human beings we all are for finding humour in ridiculous situations (not at people)
If you don't like the thread, heres a novel idea, don't read it and don't post in it.
I'm sorry that you have had trauma. Guess what, you arent the only one. Some of the ways I survived the worst sexual, physical and psychological abuse at the hands of mental health professionals was by laughing at things that happen in every day life. Twenty years later now I'm a nurse later for some reason I thought it would be a good idea to go back to work in the place where the worst abuse happened.
One of the worst abusers still works there. They have made their way up to senior management so at least they don't have patient contact any more.
Is mental health a joke? absolutely not. I live with major depression and thanks to a whole bunch of things, I spent last weekend acutely suicidal and it was only thanks to two very awesome police officers that went over and above I am still here.
I will continue to laugh at absurd situations that occur in the work place. Sometimes being able to giggle at some random thing that happened in the work place dealing with a patients trauma and distress is the only bright moment in truly horrifying days.
If that offends anyones sensibilities, can you please go take a flying leap

Kudos to those officers. Glad you're still with us @Tenebrae.

After learning some facts about the effects of witnessing domestic violence (it was my television in my early childhood--it wasn't one or two arguments--I grew up in this environment watching it like Tom and Jerry on TV and grew up to be abused physically and mentally, too.), I'm surprised I made it through without losing my mind. One person committed suicide right in front of my eyes. The other witness ended up in a psychiatric ward for a few months and several years of therapy.
I have twisted dark humor.

Called accident compensation. Basically its a no fault injury coverage scheme. Covers your costs related to your injury. If you need time off due to your injury it will pay up to 80% of your wages. If you get injured on the job it will also pay that first week.
Its one of those ebil things related to universal healthcare ?, when I fractured my arm last year and couldnt go back on the ward it covered me for a few extra weeks wages.
