Being dropped from a LVN program...Any Advice

After taking the final, my grade was under the 75% requirement to continue the private 12 month LVN program...I was dropped ...I was 8 weeks away from graduating. The director told me I may come back in June to retake the courses I didn't pass.

I reaped what I sowed from cramming all this time to get the grade. I realized I wasn't happy with the type of Nursing Student I became...too lazy to read the books...despite how much I enjoy taking care of people (been a Certified Nurse Assistant for about 9 years).

Despite what has happened I still want to become a RN...any advice? My last nursing prerequisite is Physiology

Your feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Sorry that you did not make it thru this year. If you want to continue on, you are going to have to follow the requirements of your program and complete whatever they wish you to do.

You understood what you did wrong, perhaps this is the wake-up call that you need.

Best of luck to you.

You've made a difficult, but important step in acknowledging your shortcomings as a student.

I would suggest making an appointment with your program director to ask her how she would suggest you continue to study and maintain your knowledge base until June rolls around and you can re-enroll.

You'll get there.

I am also sorry that this happened, but glad that you were able to assess your weaknesses as a student. As you know, nursing school on any level requires discipline and sacrifice. The license was not handed to any of us. Maybe this break will allow you to relax a bit, become rejuvenated and focused. I also agree that you should meet with your program director/advisor to begin from here. Best of luck to you!

i think the PP's have given great advice already.

i recommend meeting with the program director also and telling her that you really really want this and hope to return in june. in the mean time, brush up on your study skills and continue learning on your own!

also, esp since you want to continue to an RN level, maybe take that last pre-req class and do your very best in it. take this time to rest and relax so that you can go back and complete those last 8 weeks and do really well.

i wish you the best.

If I read your post right, you might have gotten better grades if you'd read and studied more? If so, now you know your weakness and can take control of it when you go back.

Don't give up on school. There are several people in the current class that had to leave when I was in last year. One lady had gone several years ago and finally decided to come back.

If you've been a CNA for 9 years, you can do this!!!

When we were being oriented to the program, the director said she owned our butts for the next year. She said we would feel like we were in boot camp, and we would hate it and neglect our families and so on.

Of course, it was sort of a tactic to scare us up and get us serious. Alot of us did neglect life during that year, nursing school consumed us.

I hope if you want to be a nurse, that you dedicate yourself to spend one little year in school that is going to greatly improve the rest of your years.

As the others have said you should go back and finish your program. Meet with the director or head instructor to get evaluative feedback and correct your course between now and June. Study everything on your own so that you are ready to tackle it with success. Good luck to you and glad to hear that you are being given a second chance. You know what you need to do in order to get through it. So take this extra time and get yourself on top of the situation.

In fact, what I would do is purchase an NCLEX Comprehensive review book and review that while waiting for a seat to open up again. This way, you'll be up to speed when the class resumes.

I'm so sorry about your situation....However,the first step is to acknowledge the problems. Sounds like you're on your way to doing that. Second step is to realize you cannot cram in nursing school. You must thoroughly read and study the material. I, too, recommend grabbing an NCLEX review book in the interim. I wish you the best of luck in June in retakiing the courses you need to in order to accomplish your goal.

Whatever you do, DON'T give up!! Go back and try again until you get it then go for your RN! Nursing school (RN/LVN) is very hard and you just have to make the time and have the desire to finish!! Go back and read, and re-read the material you lacked in or didn't understand well. Don't spend time on the nursing theory that you excell in or understand well! Trust me, it'll work! Just find the way that you learn best and use that through nursing school. That's what I did and not only did it get me through LVN School, but I maintained a 3.8-4.0 while: being Class Representative, being in a relationship, working nights as a Nurse Technician (NA)/MT/WC with lots of overtime, having no car at the time, taking other classes, and all the problems that go along with those things! So, just put your mind to it and go after what you want!!

:loveya: I thank God for this great online Nursing Community filled with caring individuals from all walks of life who I can always count on to repond immediately with compassionate insight and advice.

:heartbeat My heartful thanks goes to all of you who kindly expressed your empathy, helpful advice and tremendous encouragement to NOT GIVE UP in my desire to become a Knowledgable, Proficient, Caring Nurse that makes a difference in this world.

My challenge is that I do not enjoy reading lengthy amounts of text and I get easily distracted once I pick up a book. Lets say I have Dec-Jan-Feb-Mar-Apr-May~6 months to prepare to finish the last 3 months of the LVN program.

Where do I start? My hardest subject to grasp was Pharmocology. Also, unfortunately due to my cramming style of studying, I do not have a clear picture of the Signs and Symptoms of the diseases processes we covered in the last 6 months. Major reason I didn't pass was LATE assignments and average to poor quiz scores.

This is my wake up call and I cannot afford to make mistakes when it comes to lives on the line.

This weekend at work, I was a sitter for a pt who had a TKR and unable to void when the catheter was removed. My pt was a good gentleman who had a sense of humor, impatient, tempered and unhappy with his care. He was being discharged with his F/C which he was insistent on removing before he left. :nurse: I had to kneel down at his level, him sitting on the bed to explain that he can develop a UTI and would have to come back to reinsert F/C if he does not void. Still unhappy, he agreed and went home with his catheter still in place.

I did not agree to how this RN treated my patient, but I know the kind of licensed Nurse I want to become.

God bless ya and thanks again,

:nurse: Care4life
