more than 3 months ago, i received a letter from crnbc saying that i should undergo sec assessment at kwantlen. like most of other iens here, i didn't really know what to do as i have no idea what sec was. i've read almost all the threads about sec and still felt like i needed to know more. i've read the ien and sec fact sheets over and over and i still wanted moooore information. until the day of the assessment came and i still am clueless as to what i should expect.
day 1 passed and i went home feeling brain-drained. i felt like the written exam drained every piece of nursing knowledge there was in my brain, maybe because i havent studied enough and it's been years since i read a medical book. then day 2 came and i was given a hypothetical patient in a hypothetical situation. my mind went blank for a few moments but i tried to do the best i can. i just wanted to get this over with.
almost 2 months have passed and i still havent heard from crnbc. i dont know if i did good or bad. i just wanna know how i did so i can move on and make plans on whether i should pursue my dream of becoming a nurse here or just stay home with my beautiful daughter.

CRNBC will send you a report on your assessment. I can't tell you what the time line will be but they will tell you how you did and what, if anything, you need to do to achieve their standards. SEC isn't pass/fail like the CRNE. It's more of a ladder, with the results being the rung you stand on. They will offer suggestions to help you climb to the top. Another thng that influences how long it takes to get results is that Kwantlen does the assessment, determines the candidate's suitability and necessary remediation which they then report to CRNBC. Someone from there has to read through the assessment and place the results on the candidate's file, and then issue their own statement to the candidate. Every pair of hands (and eyes) required in a process adds to the time it takes to get things done. The waiting is difficult but there are many other things that the CRNBC is responsible for and these days all the colleges of nurses are spread pretty thin. I wouldn't throw in the towel yet. Try to be patient until you know where you stand.

You should check with CRNBC if they already received the findings of Kwantlen people. I wasted 4 months waiting for the email from CRNBC for the result of my assessment. When I phoned CRNBC to ask what's taking it too long, they told me that they haven't received the report from Kwantlen yet. I then called Kwantlen to inform them what CRNBC told me and they said that they already sent the report a week after I took the assessment. Finger pointing games began..
I actually received the letter this monday telling me to do some courses at Kwantlen. I am happy to know that the courses would only take 6 days to finish. It starts spring next year.
I actually callled CRNBC a month after the assessment and they told me they just got the result from kwantlen( took them 4 long and painful weeks to assess my job, hey?) and I waited another 5 weeks for them to process everything. Good thing the wait was over.
Anyway, I wonder if there's some kind of a financial aid or student assistance available for these kind of schooling. The 2-day course costs $500 and the other 4-day one costs $800. And I was informed that the seats are limited to 20 per session and in order to reserve one, I need to pay the full amount. I havent been working and my husband is the only one earning and we have a 6month old baby. I definitely need someone to look after her for that 6 days. We surely can't afford to have a baby sitter since my child tax havent even kicked in yet.
I would appreciate any information you can share with regards to this matter.
Cheers everyone!

Hi nursingmom2010,
I will attend the Psychomotoe Skill Review course in February - got one of the last seats.
Even for someone living in BC it is a high amount of money that has to be paid.
Fortunately I can afford the course, flight and hotel.
I am very sorry for you that you are struggling with the payment.
Just one idea - I don't know your living situation, if you are renting an appartment, house, etc., but maybe you have a not used room that can be offered to students, course participants for short periods - can imagine that rooms are in high demand in Vancouver, though not everyone can afford hootel accomodation.
This can maybe solve some financial problems!?
Hi mona77!
You are very fortunate. We're going through a hard time, really. Thanks for the suggestions.

You will only be asked to do the SEC once and after you've successfully completed the courses you will be eligible to register and sit the CRNE.

Hi! I wanna ask about the new policy of crnbc.. I am a US citizen, been here working in USA for 6 years but finished my BSN in the philippines...I wanna know if I still have to take an english exam and do I have to go to that SEC thing.. any idea please. Thanks..
Those are NOT new policies of CRNBC. The English language exam ahs been aprt of the assessment for many years and the SEC for at least 2 + years. Yes you will have to do the English language exam, and yes, you very probably will have to do SEC as well.

In regards to English exam that is something you should ask the college, in regards to SEC well USC have had to do it so a lot will depend on how your application is assessed
