BCIT January 2017

Published

Just wanted to start a group for students applying for the BCIT January program!

So I just heard back from BCIT and they said if you go substantially over you can be penalized but a few sentences is fine. Just in case anyone hasn't written this yet please keep that in mind. :)

Was there a time limit???

Yes, 90 min, and the clock counted down on the exam screen. I submitted before it got to 0 so I'm not sure what would have happened if I went over.

Just finished the questionnaire..... i finished with 40 seconds to spare haha. Good luck to everyone!! :) Sending out positive vibes.

Can someone help me understand self regulation? As google tells me, it has to do with regulating your emotions during a stressful period. Being able to deal with something hard. However, according to the links they sent us, self-regulation as an entry level nurse is having to do with knowing the regulatory bodies, understanding significants of quality assurance, continuing competence requirements etc... help!

Aliabeth, for that question i talked about how i handled certain stressful situations in the care home I worked at as well as my office job. So basically i talked about what i did before and after each situation to help myself not to feel overwhelmed. Nursing is a stressful job and i think that they want to see you have some mechanisms to help you deal with it all! Just draw from your personal experience during and after a stressful situation and elaborate on it as well as maybe telling them what you learned from each situation. I hope that helped, and good luck! :)

Thank you!!! This helps alot :)

Just finished the questionnaire, now it's a waiting game. Good luck everyone!!! :)

Specializes in NICU, PICU, PCVICU and peds oncology.

Self-regulation in this sense has NOTHING to do with personal behaviours. Nursing is considered to be a self-regulated profession, like physicians, dentists, engineers, teachers, physiotherapists, pharmacists and other similar professions. That means there is an elected body that oversees regulation of the profession with members drawn from the population it encompasses. Each province has a college of nursing that oversees curriculum design for educational programs, administration of the entry-to-practice exam, suitability of professionals from other jurisdictions to be permitted to practice, ongoing registration and evaluation of registered members and disciplinary activities. They have a responsibility to the public to ensure those they register practice according the province's Health Professions Act, that ethics and legal responsibilities are integrated into each and every nurse's practice and that those who violate any provision of the various regulations are held accountable. Therefore, these regulatory bodies are eyebrows-deep in quality assurance measures, nursing research into evidence-based practices, amending regulations as legislation changes and ensuring that ALL nurses registered with them maintain a minimum level of competence. That is what self-regulation means. There's a very nice explanation of it on the CNO website.

Thank you for this explanation - however, for those of us who are applying to this program, and have never been nurses or have had jobs that are self-regulated I'm not sure how we can draw from personal experiences that include self-regulation. Does this make sense? The questionsare related to communication skills, interpersonal skills, self-regulation, leadership, andprofessionalism...I believe grouped with the other topics, this might mean that the self-regulation they're speaking of is in fact personal behavior.

I think that they defined what they wanted in the questionnaire. How you effectively dealt with stress without risking your physical or emotional well being, and still making it through the situation. The outcome, and what you learned from the experience. So I am rather certain you're right about it being related to personal behaviour.

How we perform in a situation probably has some relation to accountability - so thanks for the explanation NRFPT ( But I hope you aren't right in relation to the questionnaire or I won't do very well :/)

Okay great this helps alot! I'm glad to hear they're pretty specific in their questions. So nervous! Taking the quiz in about an hr!
