Hello,
I have been offered a 7a-7p baylor shift position at my current job. I was wondering what types of questions I should ask. How much should the pay be? It would be, work 32 and get paid for 40. I live in the New England area.
Thanks

Ask about PTO or vacation time accrual.
How many days a year can you take off? Is there a maximum?
Is there a maximum number of weeks you can take at one time?
Do they have a restriction on the number of call-offs a year before you lose that particular position? (Ours is more than 2)
Will you be allowed to pick up shifts during the week, and if so, when can you get paid OT. Will it be after the 32 hours, or actual 40 hours worked.

I'm confused, because 7am to 7pm is only a 12 hour shift. If you work 2 of these shifts per week, you'd likely be working 24 hours and getting paid for 32 hours.
Anyhow, I worked weekend double shifts under the Baylor Plan for 2 years. I worked every Saturday and Sunday from 6am to 10pm. In other words, I worked 32 hours over the weekend and got paid for 40 hours. I loved having 5 days off in a row and having full-time perks such as benefits.
Ask them if you'll be regarded as a full-time employee.
Thank you for replying.
I think my boss is trying to be slick and offer me less money than I make now "because I am getting an extra 8 hours pay"
Also, I am not taking benefits. I do want to know if I will ever get a weekend off if I need it.
I was wondering if Baylors make more, less or the same per hour as other employees in your facility.
Thanks!

I'm sorry if I confused you. I have the option of doing Sat/Sun, two 12 hours shift and get paid for 32, or do two 12 hour shifts and a an 8 hour during the week and getting paid for 40.

What are Baylor shifts ?
1. Working two 16-hour shifts (32 hours) to get paid for 40 hours, or
2. Working two 12-hour shifts (24 hours) to get paid for 32 hours.
Baylor shifts are when you agree to work every weekend ( usually 7a-7pm, or 7p-7am) Sat and Sunday and you get paid for an extra shift. Some people work 24 hours and get paid for 32 and some work 32 and get paid 40. There are a lot of variations on this though depending on the employer.

My last job paid baylors the same rate as a regular RN would get, but they only ACTUALLY worked 24 hours, and got paid for 36. Their PTO accrual was the same, but had to use 18 hours of PTO to take a 12 hr shift off. They got to take 2 full weekends off a year for working the other 25 before getting disciplined. I would have taken a Baylor position in a heartbeat, but the senior staff would pounce on the open positions as soon as they were posted.
