Hi everyone! Just wanted to start a thread for those applying to the CRNA program at Barry University starting January 2016! Comments, Questions, Concerns, Advice...
Also, is anyone in Miami interested in starting a GRE study group?
Thanks RNKay,
Is Magoosh free? I need to at least attempt the test in March and if I don't get the desired results I will have time to retake the test before the deadline. Have you taken it yet? I am going to take the CCRN at the end of this month or at the beginning of March. Let me know your progress.
Hey CCRNCMC11,
Thank you for reaching out to us. What clinical site did you receive? Was it your first choice? Are you and your classmates happy with the program thus far? How often are the students tested on the material? Are the professors readily available for the students? How big is the total class? I am excited about applying for this program. All of the correspondence that I have had with the staff has been positive. What are your typical class days like and how long do they run? Did you complete the head start program? Are those courses brutal? I am saving up all of my coins right now because I am going to have to move my family to Florida. Are the family friendly clinical sites Ocala/Gainesville and Orlando? In what semester do clinicals actually start? Do you know anything about the reputation of the public schools? I have a lot of questions but I don't want to bombard you right now. Keep us abreast of all of the happenings at Barry. I see that they are looking for a new program director. I would like to know the scoop on the search. Keep us posted and continue studying hard.
Ok so I can't really speak to why a lot of people drop out seeing how I've only been in the program for a few weeks, but I can tell you that Barry has strict academic policies as in sure most schools do. They expect you to work your tail off the first year. They say a majority of student who fail, do so during the second semester because you have a high didactic load and start 24-36 hours per week in the OR. The first semester so far is very manageable. I will say that Barry's reputation in Florida and probably in other areas too is that Barry grads know their stuff and are very skilled and knowledgeable providers. I an also say that their board pass rates are exceedingly high. I would recommend Barry to anyone out there and I am very happy with my choice! The professors are all great so far and the tests are very fair as long as you know how to study. I study a good 40+ hours a week. As far as different clinical sites, I got my first choice and I live in west palm area already. From what I've heard this site is pretty laid back. I can't speak for the others however.
As far as applying goes let me give you the class's average stats and you can get the idea. There are around 70 of us. Average GPA: 3.45, average GRE 150/150 (they didn't mention the writing and don't worry if you don't get right at that mark bc my quant wasn't that high), icu experience: 3 years or so (I had about 3.5, some have higher some have lower), almost everyone had their CCRN. I think that about covers the criteria. If you are worried about a certain stat just do whatever you can to boost the stats you can. If you don't have the most experience, knock the gre out of the park or get a CCRN subspecialty like the cmc or csc. Take an advanced chem like organic or biochem. Anything to make yourself stand out. I would highly suggest taking at least an intro to organic because the chem and physics class is very tough and moved quickly. If you get an interview just review other past posts about it, it hasn't changed. It's pretty laid back but don't take it lightly. If you get in early enough, I would highly suggest doing the head start classes. I took all three and it helps tremendously. And as far as all the questions about local schools and things, I really have no idea because I don't have kids. Anything else y'all want to know or in missed let me know!
Oh and clinicals start second semester pretty full time (24-36 hrs a week) and every semester after that they get longer and class work gets less. For right now (the first semester) I have classes 3 days a week and an occasional sim lab on Fridays (once or twice a month). So very manageable at the start.

Hey CCRNCMC11,
Thanks a lot for all of the insight on the program, very helpful and informative. I am planning on requesting WPB at my interview next month, I will be in touch with you if I get accepted for further insight. Again thanks for your consideration for us applicants.
Yay! RNKay! That is awesome! Congratulations! I have been using Pass CCRN as well. You did an awesome job! It is comforting to know that the Pass CCRN questions are more difficult. I think I can handle it. I am going to go ahead and register today so that I can set up a test date. Did you get audited? How long did it take for you to receive your authorization to test. I really want to take it on February 27th, but I am afraid I may have waited too late. Thank you for sharing. Is that your last hurdle for applying to CRNA school or do you still need to take the GRE? Let me know how things are going. I am slowly trucking along. I registered for a chemistry course today. Mine is over five years old. Keep us posted!! Congrats again!
I didn't get audited, it took me about a week to get approved to test, and when I went to schedule, that same day, there were plenty of exam dates available (I live in Miami, Florida if that has anything to do with it). I still have the GRE (next month) and essay portion of the application to do.

Good luck! Pretty much if you request west palm and are accepted you'll get it. Let us know how it goes.
Glad to help y'all out! Anything else y'all want to know just ask away!

CCRNCMC11 Thank you!
Do you have any classmates that were accepted with 1-1.5 years of experience? Worried I wont be a competitive candidate because I will just be at my 1 year mark when applications are due. Do you mind sharing your stats? Also, can you give us an idea of what your schedule is like as far as classes/clinicals go?
GaMommy, Magoosh covers everything; verbal, writing and math. For CCRN i'm preparing with: questions using PASS-CCRN (https://evolve.elsevier.com/cs/product/9780323086677?role=student) and then laura gasparis's videos on things that i think i am weak on (which I found on youtube, otherwise they are like $200+which i might as well retake the ccrn for! So i'm not purchasing). Will share my experience after I take it!
