I interviewed for the nurse fellows program through Banner about three weeks ago and still haven't heard anything! I was talking to another girl there for an interview who said that her friend (I know, I know, don't listen to anything like this, but I can't help it!) got a call a week after her interview offering her a slot. Has anyone else interviewed and heard anything?
I don't know why I'm so freaking out about it. I'm already accepted into Mesa to start in January (I deferred) but I WANT TO GET INTO THIS!
Just curious.....Banner is laying of Nurses and other staff at this time, they have stopped construction on their new hospital. Why would any students want to do internship there if there might not be any jobs when you get done?
Well considering that even nursing is no longer recession proof pretty much in the state of Az., I would stand a better chance getting a job at Banner after completing my fellowship, especially if I were to do an externship during it. If there are no jobs at the time of my completion then I am not obligated to fulfill my part of the contract. I walk away with a degree, no questions asked. Have you attended the informations sessions? The Banner spokeperson elaborates on these types of scenarios....

You are absolutely correct. Banner is one of the best entry-points into nursing. Unless you are a complete screw-up, you are first in line for the best externships and you are assured a job in that unit. Worse comes to worse, you have a free, accelerated education.
As for the layoffs - Banner has a tremendous amount of "overhead." Very few bedside nurses will lose jobs. But there are plenty of educators, quasi-managers, and clinical nurse specialists who contribute very little to the bottom-line. My CNS spent all day in meetings and never came to the bedside in the ICU where I worked. In fact, if your name tag says "RN" and you spend more time in meetings than with patients - or you don't wear scrubs - I would worry.
To those worried about layoffs and no extern positions-
There was a very good article in the paper towards the end of last week (Thursday maybe?) about Banner and their layoffs. I would encourage you to read it it you can find it.
Stopnik explained it very well. They are laying off the people who don't provide direct patient care. For example- my Husband and I both work for a Banner facility...My Husband's night shift supervisor was just laid off and the day shift supervisor is taking responsibility for the night shift people. I, however, have not experienced any layoffs in my department. It is my understanding as well that they will start with the ancilary staff (like Stopnik said those who don't wear scrubs or provide direct patient care).
As for the Extern positions...Yes, SOME Banner facilities are stopping this program...for now. This recession will not last forever, and I guess within a relatively short period of time they will bring these types of positions back, because it providees a guaranteed employee with hands on experience for Banner. I know for a fact that Banner Thunderbird is still hiring Externs, because they are adding a few hundred more beds to their hospital. I believe that it is Banner Gateway that is also keeping the Extern positions because of their growth (I could be wrong on this second hospital, however I do know there is one more hospital w/in Banner keeping the program).
That said...CONGRATS to FKA Paralegal and jbac on your interviews. Good luck. I was accepted into the March GWCC cohort, so maybe you will join us? Let us know!
Hope all this info was useful?
Hey, has anybody who is starting in March heard anything regarding financial aid disbursement dates? I heard that since we start "late" that we only get three disbursements. I need to know when we will recieve financial aid and if it's true there are only three disbursements. I called Gateway and the girl who answered was of no assistance. Has anybody inquired about this?
I just called Gateway Financial Aid to ask if all of my documents were in. The lady told me that my paperwork is complete, however I am not showing as registered for any classes. Hopefully they will get us registered soon so that we can get the admission packet and our financial aid.
I then asked her about disbursement, and she told me that the February 2nd disbursement is for those who began classes in January. For those of us who begin classes in March, she said our disbursement begins on the first day of class. She said that they don't like to disburse before the class begins in case we drop out, etc... It would be really nice to have that extra money, but I guess I can understand their reasoning. Hope this helps!
I don't think that I did so well at my interview today. I have the life skills required to pursue a career in nursing, but I have had no interaction with patients in a hospital setting. I know that they were seeking some insight regarding my experiences in the healthcare. I am definitely at a disadvantage if that is what they're looking for. Hopefully they weigh in my 4.0 gpa and high NET score. They said they were going notify us next week. EEEK!!
The interview was a lot less intimidating than I thought it would be. Everything was very straight forward. I left the interviewing wishing I would have said this or that, but I covered a little bit of everything. I was thorough and tried to keep my answers short. Yeah, they said next week. Hopefully sooner rather than later in the week.
