Hey, just wondering your opinion. I am on Effexor-XR and have a problem with alcohol. I find it hard to resist when I am in social situations and it usually ends up pretty bad. I am feeling kinda weak tonight and am deciding not to go the Christmas party at our Nurse Educator's house. I just dont feel like it. I have only been at this position for 1.5 months and just am not into going. I am told by one person that isn't going that it is "just a big drink fest." Is it bad if I don't go tonight?

i'm always uncomfortable at parties; my husband loves them. so we go to the parties for his unit, and i don't even tell him about the parties for my unit! his party was last weekend, and i had to work. so he went to the party and got nice and toasted, and i came by after work (i brought my orientee and her husband so i'd have someone to talk to) and stayed for dinner and drinks. to my great surprise, i had fun! but i'm still not going to mine next weekend!

I choose not to drink, and I just went to our C'mas party last night. It was embarrassing to watch some the nurses I work w/everyday smashed and making fools of themselves!! Hugging and kissing doctors and others that aren't that way at all. There is much to be said for staying sober!!!!!!!! Is it bad not to go?? No, I think it's healthy & sane to stay home!!

If you have an alcohol problem, obviously it's a good idea to avoid tempting situations.

I personally love going out with my team - we are very good friends and always have a great time. The big work Xmas party was this weekend and it was great to have a chance to chat with people I normally don't have time to, or to just sit down and have a social conversation with some of our docs in a non-stressful situation. There is no judgment of people that choose not to come though - to each their own.

The behavior of some people is amazing...my girlfriend participated in organizing and selling tickets to their med-surg party and she has serious regrets. Outside of the lecherous bum, she told me that many of the members that assisted in this gave away free tickets without their knowledge and the caterer threw a fit and told her that she was not going anywhere until she came up with $1200 immediately to accomodate these extra freeloaders. She had to immediately break up the gift baskets for the raffle to sell more tickets and she even raffled off embarassed doctors to dance with people so that they can raise that money. She had to walk up to people and demand money from them ($60) immediately, or LEAVE.

And at work the other day (I guess there was some spiked punch sneaking around), a PCA licked a doctor's face. I hear that he was so horrified that he stalked off and went to wash his face.

If people can get together and act civil, that is one thing, but when the ruckus starts, these are things that usually follow to the workplace; are not work related, but nonetheless make the workplace difficult. It has always been better for me to stay away.

deva, I'm chuckling over here. And cracking up at the poor licked doctor! I can just imagine his horror!

HAH!
