Bad Clinical Instructor

How much bad behavior should be tolerated?

What do you do when you have a clinical instructor who lies? These clinical instructors are something else. They think it's appropriate to put on an evaluation that's posted online everything the student does wrong, making it appear that the student is morally or professionally unfit, even when you explained what occurred such as the charge nurse was not involved with teaching the student - but the student gets all their work done and make sure the patient was taken care of more than the actual nurse.

This to me warrants disciplinary action on the instructor. They end up teaching even though they have unsatisfactory evaluations from students. You don't get to choose your clinical instructor and, by all means, you'll never choose some of these instructors, not to mention you pay the  school for instruction.  The instructors will throw you under the bus, so it makes sense to,  in two seconds,  send them to the board of nursing for a complaint for unsatisfactory and immoral behavior. The reason why this is necessary is because you can't tell a nursing instructor your concerns or else you'll get a target on  your back (due to bullying). This is not tolerating bad behavior by clinical instructors.

Correct me if I'm wrong. I think you don't understand how the Board of Nursing function.

I'm surprised at how 'off' these responses are. The truth is you both have no answers. And, I don't care if I have a clinical site, so me being thankful has nothing to do with it. I don't care if the nurse teaches me anything. I'm simply don't care anything about a clinical site. That has nothing to do with me. This is why nursing gets worse. Know it all students like yourself, Firemedic, have nothing else to say, so say negative things. Please respond with less deranged comments.

Listen friend, I told you in my first response that if you wanted useful input, you’d need to share at least some of the details.  Since you won't, we’re responding based on the extremely limited information you’re offering up, which when combined with your markedly defensive responses, does not make a great case that you have been treated unfairly.

Nursing school is difficult. In these times (covid, short staffing) nurses on the floor are being pulled in many directions. Here are some suggestions:

1. Ask for a meeting with your clinical instructor. If thats not possible, ask for at least a personal phone call.

2. If you are still having issues, ask to change clinical instructors.

3. Do you have a trusted friend in the program? Ask them to critique your clinical skills or interpersonal skills (like others, its hard to tell what the issue is without more details).

What does it have to do with you?? Hopes, career plans? future? Knowledge, skills, and attitude of the nurse? How do you acquire these in your view?

Are you attending a "for-profit"? If so the $ only goes one way.....

That's easy. If I can prove that an instructor fabricated something against me that I didn't do and affect me negatively, I'll take care of it at the office. If it's a correction to improve and polish me, I'm grateful for it. Blame the litigious society why they have to document everything you did correct and incorrect.

Some of my classmates would threatened to lawyer up. Look up colleges that were federally shutdown in December 2018 in the US. Nowadays, I hate it I'm held in the classroom when the lecture is done. I should be able to make that choice to stay or not. If my grades are suffering, then I understand why I'm expected to spend time with my instructor. This crazy rule was because of some students who needed more time. Why would apply to people who are fine reading theory alone at home?

Frankly, I resent some students. That's because their preference affects me. I don't like it!

I can already tell by your replies that you’re hostile, egotistical, and not open to constructive feedback. It also seems that when critiqued, you immediately try to intimidate the other party. I would also give you poor reviews if this is how you behave. You need to be receptive to what people are saying or there’s a good chance you’ll be dismissed from the program. I promise, they don’t want possibly unstable people who are unwilling to be open and learn wasting their time when there are a ton of people on the waiting list.

She came to my unit and then said I wasn't ready for that unit, when she had been with other students. The only time she speaks with me is when she comes to my unit, no other interaction. So there is no way she can say I am not ready for a unit. It may be true, but not based on her interpretation. People can say what they want, but  they shouldn't make up things to meet their agenda.

Why you didn't ask her why she assigned you in that unit then if her judgment that you weren't fit for?

How can you be with an instructor without an interaction? Where's your original instructor? Was she a substitute for that day?  How do you do your care plan, MAR, and passing medications without your instructor?

Who assigned you to that unit? How your program is structured? Is it that school who sends you to a clinical site alone? If so, then your instructor should came up with the plan to help you if you were noticeably unprepared.

Can I ask you to take a moment of self reflection and honestly answer - do you feel like you’re ready to be on that unit?

There are no answers for your disgruntled but nonspecific complaints. I'm not reading any actual evidence that the nursing instructor lied in your remarks...only that you are accusing them of lying because you don't appreciate the evaluation of your efforts.
