Applications are received by the customer service team of five people. The team documents receipt of the application and reviews it, with attached documentation, and processes the fee payment. Staff then create a physical file for the documents and send an acknowledgment to the applicant, along with a status report on what documents have been received to date and what documents are outstanding. Any documentation in a language other than English or French must be translated.

The file is then forwarded to the registration team, composed of seven registration assessors, three customer service associates, one coordinator, the Registration Committee administrator and one registration consultant. A registration assessor is assigned to the file and begins assessment of the educational program if information has been received. The assessment of other requirements such as practical experience and exams generally follows assessment of the education programs.

If the applicant's educational program is unique (not previously assessed by CNO) and was completed outside Canada, CNO contacts World Education Services (WES). WES assesses the education level equivalency. CNO absorbs the cost of the WES assessment. CNO then carries out a paper-based content and competency assessment to determine if the nursing program is comparable to an Ontario nursing program.

If the assessor finds that the education requirement is met, the applicant is ready to apply for the exam. If the applicant does not meet the educational requirement based on the education program alone, the applicant is requested to provide any additional education and/or work experience information to CNO. If an applicant has additional education and/or work experience, the file is referred to a work group of expert nurses to review and make a recommendation on education equivalency. The file and the work group's opinion are sent to the Registration Committee for a decision among these options:

  • register the applicant
  • register with terms, limitations or conditions imposed on the certificate
  • refuse the application
  • refer back to staff for further information.

Alternatively, if the applicant has no other education or experience, the file is referred to the Registration Committee for a decision. All files referred to the Registration Committee are reviewed for two factors: to see if the applicant's basic program meets the education requirement, and if it does not, then to see if the applicant's nursing experience and additional education along with the basic nursing program are equivalent to the education requirement.

Why is the wait so difficult?

I have been waiting atleast 5 months .

i have been waiting atleast 5 months .

@r.u.serius from the beginning untill now over a year

I waited 6 months and it felt like years!!! I think it's harder because you can't really make any plans until you know what is happening with registration, you need that before anyone will really offer you a job etc which is understandable.

You have to fulfill all 7 reuirements, however the one on citizenship/ eligibility to work in Canada does NOT need to be completed/ prooven until you come to actually register. I am CRNE eligible and it's only when I pay them more money and actually register that I have to provide a Canadian police check and proof that I can work in Canada.

Its so hard to wait with a family to take care of. There needs to be a website for us to access our apllication process.

That would be a nice idea, a system where you can just check up and see how far along the form is, but then I guess it would cost a lot to set up and you can always call customer services to get an update...

yes, i spoke with my assessor. she said she'll check my docs to and give me a call tom. I hope she will find it. but anyway, how long does it take to find out the result of the assessment? I apply for a RN though.

hello. i'm just wondering, how would you know who your assessor is? i have sent my application from and other documents needed to CNO since January 2011. i have received the BET forms but haven't finished filling it up yet. however, i have sent my IELTS result, school records, registration verification and am about to mail the employer's verification too. i always call CNO whenever i need information and it's always a different person.

i'm not sure if i am on the stage where i should have an assessor already. do they start updating you after you've completed the necessary documents and just waiting for eligibility or notification to undergo bridging program?

thank you!

Hi Jay_J,

Usually your Registration Administrator/Assessor will send you updates every time they receive documents in your name. His/her name is printed on the letter with his/her signature. :D You'd better send that BET for it takes awhile for an answer :p

I payed the application fee last July 2010, they receive ALL/Completed documents including the BET last January. So I am counting 3 and a half months waiting since my file is with the Assessment team. :)

i know.. the sooner i finish and mail it to them, the better. things have been pretty hectic for the past month and i couldn't concentrate on it. and i don't wanna blow my chances just by doing it fast and not giving it my all. probably one of the reasons why i can't seem to finish it. hehehe!

i'm starting to get stressed out especially i'm still waiting for the visa to arrive. it should arrive this month. it's validity is only up to September 17,2011 and up to now it's still not in my hands. i can't move forward. i just hope that my application would go smooth after i submit my BET... and i mean not having to do bridging program. coz if i do, i might as well start applying for RPN now and not waste any more time. but then there's no way of finding out now. argh! decisions, decision, decisions :(

by the way, how long does it take for CNO to get back with a decisions after submitting and paying for the RPN application? considering that they already have all the documents they'll need from me from my RN application...

thank you!

:tinkbll: 5 of my friends who'd apply for RPN assessment who are also a Pinoy RN, got their eligibility to write the national exam for RPN after 3months from the date of their initial submission of their application kit and fee :)

all the best Jay_j

Let the applicant pay the cost to access this info. I would gladly pay to know what was going on.:D
