Baby born w/o a face..WOW!!

Published

I recently ran across this story about a baby born w/ no face. She can see but she has to breathe w/ a trach and eat through her stomach via feeding tube. Here is her story w/ a short video clip below..

I thought it was incredibly sad, but beautiful and uplifting too. What a cute little girl - by that I mean her spirit shined through. What they said about god giving her to them because they could handle it was just awesome. What remarkable people.

This is why an amniocentesis is always a good idea.

very sad situation.

What would an amnio have told those parents?

Would it have told them how that little girl would bring smiles to faces of other children? Would it have told them that she would make her parents laugh and cry and love life? Would it have told them that they'd love her just as much as their other daughter? Would it have told them that she would teach other children to see what's on the inside, not what's on the outside? Would it have told them that this child would live in the hearts of people all over the world? Would it have told them that this little girl would touch the lives of everyone she came in contact with?

No?

I didn't think so.

So why bother?

Please rethink your answer, Rusty. It is a sad situation, yes, but it's not the end of the world. And what if the mother had an abortion and hemorrhaged and left her first daughter motherless? What if the mom had an abortion and then became so depressed that she took her own life or that of her family? Drastic examples, yes, but just making the point that it could've been worse, with or without an amniocentesis. Not a debate about abortion, either. These parents have recieved this child into their life just like they did with their first daughter. They love her unconditionally and are giving her the best life possible. Isn't that what we all want parents to be like? Good for them.

Specializes in ER, PED'S, NICU, CLINICAL M., ONCO..

I just went through my finals in neonatology at our main Pediatric Hospital (Dr. Garraham) I remember one of the last classes related to newborn with deformities, given by a chief plastic surgeon.

I work in a private institution at the NICU, delivery room and rooming in. The hardest I've seen was a cleft lip in a very wealthy family.

Our main peds hosp. it is quite different. It is a public hospital. It receives everything from every where by plane, helicopter or ambulance. Whatever that can't be work out somewhere else comes to it. You have no idea of what can be seen in such a place.

I would not put God as a buffer between our negligence and our deeds. There are things to be done and things to avoid, like folic acid and teratogenics, obstetric echographies and so on.

There is no posture to stand on. We must remain non judgemental and do our job, if we want to remain healthy. Our job is also to teach, to inform in order to avoid such disgraces.

In a way, she reminds me of the one of those adorable muppett babies off of the 1980's cartoon show, not in an offensive way, but cute and cuddly  awwwww...
