B honest, how many B or C students are out there?

Nursing Students General Students

I posted my B grades and it seems like I am the only one? Am I or are all of you B students out there made to feel ashamed of your grades? It seems lately there has been an aweful lot of talk about being an A student. I was feeling kind of down about the fact that I worked my back side off and the best I could do was a B. Please tell me I am not alone here. I know I can't be but where are all of you? I know as far as averages go in my class of 40+ students only about 8 of them were A's for the semester. Please post so I can congratulate all of the other passing grades as well!

I will post mine. I am finally proud of my accomplishments!

B- Nursing 102

B A&P 2

B+ (last but not least) Microbiology

Anyone else want to share their sucesses here?:)

I know a lot of us A students haven't started Nursing program yet. I am currently averaging a high A in A&P I, but that is the ONLY CLASS I AM TAKING. Next semester I have A&P II and Nursing 101, we'll see if I stay on my "throne." :chuckle

Ditto for me! (Except I'm taking Nutrition with A&P II next semester.):)

When I was in high school I was an A and B student without even trying. I slept through the last 2 years and I graduated with a 3.3, I wish I did better because I probably could have gotten a 4.0 but I had a lot of outside problems. ANYWAY, college was a real wake up call. I'm working my butt off to manage B's in A&P and Nursing, and sometimes it's really frustrating. I came into this saying "I'm gonna get a 4.0!" since I didn't manage it in high school, but I never realized how hard this would be. I'm happy just knowing that I worked my hardest and did the best I could... and PASSED! (hopefully, don't want to jinx myself! :chuckle )

When I applied for the ADN program, my GPA was 3.5 and I ended up being 44th out of 180, but still 4th on the alternate list. I'm not sure what kind of GPA's the students who immediately were accepted had. I have always been a A/B student without trying much and it's a bad thing. It's made me lazy and unmotivated. I have tried to be different this semester, but it's so hard to break an old habit. Currently, I'm spending about 4-5 hours a week total studying outside the classroom. I'm pulling B's in all my classes, with a borderline A/B in Pharmacology. I know there are students in our program who are close to failing (below 75) and I know students who could not show up for the last exams and still pass.

I think if you feel good about your grade, that's all that matters. I could be a straight A student in nursing school if I actually put in some effort studying. Although I don't spend hours studying, I do pay attention in clinicals and in lecture. I am very confident in what I'm doing when we are in clinical rotations and I'm good with my patients. If I didn't feel prepared for that part of it, I would have my butt buried in books 24/7.

The number of students who were A students before they entered this program and are now B/C students is overwhelming. And they are freaking out. One girl is always on the verge of tears because she NEVER got lower than an A in any class. I think this is a rude awakening for her. For me, I don't get upset if I don't do well on exam because I'm very aware of how much time I spent preparing for that exam. I did decide to study for this last Health Assessment exam and got a 93, so I guess studying does pay off! LOL

I can't be a C student, C is considered failing in my program.

My grades tend to be right around the cutoff between A and B in most of my classes. Sometimes they are high enough to get the A, sometimes I get the B. As long as my grades don't fall below the B level I'm happy.

:p I think this thread is a great one! About a year ago, I asked if i was the only mediocre stu around? In college I got B's and C's. But since starting all these science pre-reqs I am darned proud of my C's! Yes I work my ^*$%#& off getting them! I also work to keep my family in tact and loved! So here are my grades thus far: (I'll start clinicals next fall)

Algebra A

Anatomy & Physio C

Med. Microbiology C

Physiology II C (so far, though I'm teetering on a B)

We need to lighten up a bit on one another. I love the subject matter, and I work very hard for my grades. I would love to see more B's, but all I can do is all I can do.

I love the C= RN. Heather

Before getting into the nursing program I had made all A's with the exception of one B which was one point away from being an A. My GPA was 3.8, then reality of nursing school hit  I have two B's one C and I'm not sure what the other grade will be, I hope it will be at least a B! All of the 4.0 students are now making B's, but hey, at least we're passing!!!:D Can't wait until December 2004!

Well said, Snag!! I totally agree and couldn't add more. 1st semester nursing student here (ADN program) and proud to have an 88. Those of you who study until the crack of dawn to get your A's - hats off to you. However, those of us who have families, jobs outside of school, etc. who cram the night before a test (like me!!) and still make it - Hey! Whatever works for ya! Like Snag said, you'll do the real learning AFTER you get out of school!

The first semester of nursing school I got all A's, but that has since changed! Now I am a solid B student and proud of it! I don't stress over not getting an A anymore. Nursing school is tough and I am happy to get a 75 or above on a test. I am proud to say that I have never failed a nursing test (below 75) knock on wood! Look at this way..C=RN..but not that I don't try to do better.

To get into the nursing program here, you have to be an A student. I think it is a shame because there are a lot of people who would make great nurses but have children and jobs and are unable to make all A's.

I am married with no children. My husband is supporting us while I'm in school and I have no daycare problems, sick kids or family obligations to interfere with my study time. It's no wonder I have a 4.0.

Once you are in the program it doesn't matter if you are an A or B student, but the competition to get in has raised the minimum GPA for the spring semester to a 3.77.

I don't think I'm any smarter or more hardworking than those people who weren't accepted, I just have a lot more time to focus on schoolwork.

Wow LauraLou,

Talk about a tough nursing program! Is it an ADN program or BSN?

You are fortunate to not have to work and have a husband who can financially support you while you are in school. Unfortunately, that option is not available for most people. Nowadays, it takes two incomes to get a household by. It's definitely hard when there are other obligations (jobs, kids, spouse, etc) outside of school. Consider yourself a lucky person!! Good luck and look forward to hearing from you again.

I just wanted to make one more comment about this. I am a 4.0 student but at the BSN you have to have a *MINIMUM* of a 3.5 for them even to LOOK at your application for nursing school. So most of us trying to get in know we HAVE to make As to even GET into nursing school. Its very competitive here (well a lot of places are). So some of us may be talking about our grades cause for us they are the end all be all or we wont be getting into the nursing program at all.

I went into Chemistry and Microbiology determined to get 'A's b/c it's the Fall semester grades that are reviewed for BSN program next year. I have an 'A' average in Micro and think I can maintain it. I literally have ulcers trying to squeak out a 'B' in Chemistry.

It looks like no matter how hard I try, I'm not going to make it.

It's been the most demoralizing class experience I've ever had -- and I already have a BA. My teacher is right out of grad school -- and I get the impression she's leaving for full-time mom next year. This is a temp job for her! She is busting our chops and in some wierd power trip mentality appears willing to fail large number of students. The joke when we walk into the classroom (before she arrives) is "Welcome back to Hell". We have a 63 average in the class -- she announced last class don't count on any curve -- b/c she's averaging the grades of ALL her Chem I classes together. (WHAT!!?? -- that's not on the syllabus!) I wish I could say I was learning a lot of Chemistry -- that's not the case. I hope for future students she doesn't return to the classroom. I can't believe I've run into a buzzsaw like this while working on JUST prereqs -- I kick myself for not withdrawing (hindsight).

Anyway -- after telling one of the nursing school advisors that I won't have a 4.0 in the fall, and that I may make a 'C' in Chemistry, she paused, and asked if I was applying to several schools. Pass the extra-strength Maalox.

I'm really having to lean on my support system at this moment to keep up the intense studying for this class. One more test and one final to go. It's really hard.

thx,

During my first semester in Nursing School, my instructor told us a story about her roomate while she was in nursing school. Her roomate was a 4.0 perfect student all the way through, but......after graduation, she just couldn't handle the 1:1 patient contact and could not perform as a nurse. Within 2 months, her roomate was out of nursing and moving on to another field. This person did not have the common sense to go with her perfect GPA. My point is.....you can have the best grades in the world and it won't matter, what matters is do you have what it takes to be a "real nurse"??? Whether you are a C or an A student, it does not reflect on how well you grasp being a nurse, it reflects how well you can take the tests.

For all of you that are wondering, I have a 3.45 GPA, but I have many classmates that have a 2.0 and I would gladly welcome any one of them as my nurse.
