Published

Anyone out there who would like to commiserate about waiting anxiously to be accepted to the ACC ADN program in the fall 2012 semester?

Have you received your petition for Nursing skills yet? Pre-reqs and co-reqs completed?

Hope to hear from some of you (or all) soon!

Hey Radiation!! You're currently level 2 or 3 now, right? When you were accepted and did the background check, how long did it take for it to come back/get clearance to register? I did mine last night and I'm sure it'll be done in a few days, but I wonder how long after that it takes for the nursing school to give me clearance to reg.

Just curious :)

I got my official hybrid next steps email 9/30/10 and I got my email from ACC saying it had been approved and I could register on 10/18/10. I believe I was able to see my background check had passed on the background check website but it took that long for ACC to finally send me the email. Remember though, my admitting class had close to 150 students so it might not take as long for you guys since your class is markedly smaller.

The email telling me I had passed my background check also contained instructions on exactly which classes to register for. While waiting for that I went ahead and visited the uniform shop to order 2 sets of teal scrubs and patches. Insider tip....if any of ya'll are short on money, you can wait on the lab coat. I got mine when I got my scrubs but to this day I have not worn it. I will need if for graduation this December and that is about it. Some of my classmates did wear theirs when they would go to the hospital the night before and pick out their patients and they would throw it over their nice work clothes.

Hey everyone,

I'm new to posting, but have been following you guys for years. I just got my provisional acceptance letter yesterday and I'm a little worried about the "provisional" aspect of it. I know it's partially based on the background check, which I'm not worried about. But the fact that having enough professors/space in classes is a factor worries me. Can anyone shed some light on whether it's still a possibility that there wont be space for me? Should I go ahead and start doing CPR, etc or should I just wait until I have my placement email?

Congrats!!! I'm pretty sure you are in. When they say "provisional" they usually mean background check. A lot of people don't pass that part for reasons of their own. I've never heard of someone not getting accepted after receiving the acceptance letter due to not having enough faculty.

Yeah - I would go ahead and start if I were you. I really don't think they'd send you that e-mail if they didn't think they'd be able to fit you in. Plus, the deadline for CPR is Aug 1, which is only a little more than a month away, and there is a finite number of classes available in the Austin area. Maybe wait on the lab pack and scrubs. Also start on the 2-step TB test, since you have to wait 2-3 weeks in between the first and second test and there are only 5 weeks between now and Aug 1.

That's just my opinion, though. :) Congrats on the acceptance!

As far as the Nursing Skills class goes, would you guys highly recommend getting the textbook (Fundamentals of Nursing + Study Guide + Video Guide to Clinical Nursing) or is it actually required?

Specializes in Telemetry.

Yes, I would buy them. You'll need the book and the videos. I never really used the study guide, but there really wasn't an option not to buy it. They're all sold together in a box. Plus, you'll need them for level 1.

Just so everyone knows, you can purchase a digital copy of the Fundamentals of Nursing textbook if you don't want to carry that huge thing around. But it doesn't come with the videos that way :( Also, there's a huge list of textbooks we need for Level 1. Does anyone know if it's possible to use older editions on things like Mosby's dictionary and drug list or the Med-Surg text?

Also, thanks to Radiation and Goshojosh for the input. I got my Official letter the next day. :)

Yay!!!! Congrats!!

I bought the mosbys dictionary for level 1 and I have yet to even open it. I did use Mosbys Manual of Diagnostic and Laboratory tests all the time in level 1, 2, and 3. It is a great resource for lab values and rationales as the why values would be elevated or depleted. Helps tremendously when analyzing labs for care plans in level 2. I also used the nursing diagnosis handbook a lot for care plans. Mosby's dictionary, never used. Also, if you have a smart phone, I used the app, pocket lab values soooooo many times in clinical. I believe it is only $1.99-$2.99 but so worth it! I also reference the medscape free app a lot in clinical to do a quick search of meds. This comes in real handy by the time you reach level 3 and your aren't allowed to bring any textbooks or drugbooks with you to clinical in pedi. Mind you, I only used it as a loose reference, when you are looking up your med info for homework and in clinical, ACC will only accept info from the required drug book( level 1-4) and IV drug book (level 2). I would recommend getting the latest edition of the med books.

The Med/Surg Lewis textbook was switched from the 7th edition to 8th edition halfway through my level 1. By the time I got to level 2 the instructors had changed all the page numbers for required readings to match the 8th edition. I would get the 8th edition. If yall's level 1 is anything like mine was, we used the same book that we used in nursing skills for the first half of level 1. We didn't shift to the Med/Surg book until the second 8 weeks of level 1. So if you are short on funds you can wait a little.
