Austin Community College (ACC) - Fall 2010 Hopefuls

Published

I'm a Fall 2010 applicant at ACC and thought it would be nice for all the Fall 2010 hopefuls to have our own thread to share exciting news, information, and support with each other.

I turned in my application last Friday (Dec. 18th) after taking the HESI exam. I feel good about my scores but I anticipate competition for the Fall spots is going to be quite fierce. After that large applicant pool for Spring I think we will see a lot of re-applicants applying with the 5 extra re-application points. Not sure what that will mean for the ranking scores but it will be interesting to see . . .

Good luck to all the Fall 2010 applicants!

adamsrtb - they are located in the syllabus, at the end of module 2. There is one for handwashing, and one for PPE.

If anyone (from any section) is interested in doing a study group for the lecture material at some point, I'd be down for it. I live in South Austin, but I can get downtown, central, or east pretty easily.

Hey, y'all -- hope everyone had a good weekend! Except for a slight detour to the Alamo Drafthouse, I spent my days off creating online flashcards for Modules 1 through 6. They're mostly Q&A with some definitions, some lists, PERSON, etc.

Send me a PM if you'd like the link to the cards. :) I wanted to get them done this weekend, since our first test is a week from tomorrow!

Oh geez, PERSON! Familiarize yourself with that, because you will be using it every single semester you are in nursing school! Sorry I just had to jump in here..I just graduated from ACC in December and seeing all this brings back memories. It is a really great program and they do a good job preparing you for the NCLEX. Good Luck and let me know if you have any questions!!! :D

Does anybody known how big the reapplicant field is from the spring? Like a 100 or something? I should have a 53 as a first applicant with a 4.0 gpa and a b :( on the hesi and im scared i won't get in because of the replicants. I am irritated about the 5 extra points for reaplicants because it is causing first time applicants who should get in to not and acc needs to start controlling the number of people who are doing pre-nursing like at ut. Waiting a year to get in is abosloutly ridiculous and its gonna cause more people to flunk out because they wont remeber much. You're better off going to ut or texas state then with all that time waiting. It saddens me to see people having to wait so long to get and the problem is going to just get worse with out some control over the students doing pre-nursing. If i don't get in this fall, im going straight to ut but i really want to go to acc because of their reputation, hands on stuff and the new CEC,

You would be surprised at the things you remember! I started level 1 a few weeks ago- i know its early...but we've already done SO much, including a dosage exam (i took pharm in fall 2008), and a basic skills test (i took 1105 over a year ago). I somehow managed to do really well on these considering its been quite a while since Ive even LOOKED at that stuff!. And if you do a little research, a year wait really isn't THAT bad...most schools generally have a 1-2 year wait right now. I'm thankful for the extra 5 points :) We've also had our first check off, clinical experience, AND exam! Its a lot of work but Im really enjoying it (so far!):D

I didn't mean it in a way to be mean or anything and don't believe that most people would flunk out because of waiting for a long time. I have just seen some people in my classes struggling really hard with the material in some of the pre-nursing classes and wonder if they can make it in nursing school. I want everyone to do well in nursing and think people might do better with the info fresh in their head. When i was doing the hesi, it had been a couple years since i had done basic math stuff and was suprised at how much i didnt remeber, but after looking and reviewing it It came back to me. I just got my ranking score of 53 and am a little irritated i didn't get an a on the hesi but i accept and will have to pray that its enough for me to get in. If not im gonna go to UT for im applying now and finsihing up the pre-reqs to apply for spring 2011 semster. This waiting period is so stressful because you work so hard to get through physiology and stuff :lol2:. I would love to know other fall 2010 first applicant scores so we can figure were we'd place. thanks

Honestly, the pre-nursing stuff is very different from what you do in the program. Some of the people that were ranked dead last are at the top of the class now. The test are very different, and it requires a different kind of thinking and studying that what you are used to. I understand how frustrating the wait is, but it will pay off. :D I would say the only thing that really helps to be fresh on is anatomy & physiology.

RADIATIONRN2BE- I've been looking all over this website for information about getting hired with Seton!! (I'm new to the site).

HOW DID YOU GET HIRED? I've tried calling, applying to any position that I can... I'm only applying to CA I positions, and I've been "routed" (which means I've met basic and preferred requirements") but no luck getting an interview, etc. Do you have any advice on getting hired with them, or who to call?

Honestly, it took me about 3 times of applying before I got a call for an interview. What finally got me "in the door" was that I finally used an inside connection that I had. Sadly, it was the only way I could even get an interview. Sorry I don't have any more tips, alot of the luck was that I knew someone who worked on the floor I wanted to work on. Good luck and don't get too flustered just yet.

That's what I've heard- it's all about who you know. Thankfully, I've met 2 ladies that work for Seton, and I've received helpful advice from them, but I have yet to be hired. I'm thinking another person will come along sometime that I'll be able to talk to more... and then who knows! : ) Thanks for the quick response. I appreciate it.

How do you like Seton? I've heard it's a great place to work for. How long have you been employed there? ....umm, are these questions I'm allowed to ask? Sorry if I'm being too direct.

I like Seton. I am only there PRN because I work full time for Texas Oncology. I want to continue in oncology after I graduate and the only designated full oncology unit here in Austin is at Seton Main. I like the hospital system though. The only thing I don't really like is the fact that it is an older hospital so they are still using paper charting. The newer hospitals are electronic and eventually from what I hear, we will shift to the electronic charting. If you do get hired with Seton, they will send you through their clinical assistant classes. I believe for someone with no experience it is 5 days. They teach you the basic skills and how Seton likes them done. I was hired in October there. Since I can only work the weekends, I haven't worked there too often. Probably about 10 shifts since I started in November. If I get in to the RN program then I am going to look in to picking up more hours as I will most likely have to cut my fulltime job to part time.

My friend recently got hired at St. Davids and in talking to her, alot of the orientation and skills classes seem very similar. Of course they have the system I am used to for charting, Meditech.

Hi ladies I am not a 2010 hopeful more like a 2012 hopeful but I was hoping someone could answer a question that is burning in my brain.

I would really love to know what the schedule is for the RN program. I read a response on here saying that it was 2 4hour days of lecture...one 4 hour day of lab, 2 8hour days of clinicals. Does anyone know if this is accurate? Also on the 4 hour days is it morning classe or night? Do you have an option or you get what you get kind of thing?

Also I read once on here (I really have tried to read alot of the responses on different threads to not repeat the same question) that at ACC you can take your lecture online but there was only so many spots open for that. Is that true and how do you get lucky enough to sign on to that? I absolutely love distant learning classes..totally my style!

Thank you so much for anyone who can answer my questions I would be greatly appreciated!
