Austin Community College (ACC) - Fall 2010 Hopefuls

Published

I'm a Fall 2010 applicant at ACC and thought it would be nice for all the Fall 2010 hopefuls to have our own thread to share exciting news, information, and support with each other.

I turned in my application last Friday (Dec. 18th) after taking the HESI exam. I feel good about my scores but I anticipate competition for the Fall spots is going to be quite fierce. After that large applicant pool for Spring I think we will see a lot of re-applicants applying with the 5 extra re-application points. Not sure what that will mean for the ranking scores but it will be interesting to see . . .

Good luck to all the Fall 2010 applicants!

Purkinje~ First day of 1105 was great. I really enjoyed both of them as well. I was in lab with C and left when she let us out. I didn't even think about going over to D's side. What more did she go over? Which one were you?

I was getting ready to leave with everyone else, but I paused to listen to C explain something to someone else. D's students came in to get their books and I followed them over to see what she was doing. D reviewed the different diseases and the precautions they require, then talked about how we'll get a scenario and have to choose the correct precaution, then put on PPE as appropriate. She also told us to review our checkoff sheets in the syllabus as we practice the skills, since we're graded right from them.

I have red hair and I was sitting on the right-hand side of the room. I talked about how I'm in marketing at the moment, and that my sister got her ADN from ACC and is an ER nurse. Which one were you?

I should of stayed, but I was in such a hurry to leave cause I was hungry! I sat on the left side (facing front of class) second to last row, wore black top, dark hair, and asian. Ha!

Purkinje ~ What do you think your chances are of getting into the program for the fall? Someone posted that your gpa is multiplied by 11 if you've already taken 1105. Do you know if this is true? Just doesn't seem right.

I enjoyed the intro as well, I wish I would have stayed loner also. I am the one who said I was a waitor. I was with C, nice lady Im glad there are two. They both seem extremely knowledgeable. It's nice to finally be in a class surrounded by nursing instead of a pre-req.

See you guys Monday!!

I'm in the Hybrid section with Radiation. Really enjoyed our instructor and can tell it will be an interesting, fast paced 10 weeks. Sounds like our class is much like the on-site sections, with the exception that we are expected to review the modules and Powerpoints in advance of our 1 day/week 4-hour lab and come prepared to review our understanding of the skills and practice in the simulated clinical setting.

Another interesting, yet somewhat disheartening, tidbit - Our class was cautioned by our instructor to not get our hopes up about making it in our first application round. She also mentioned that program numbers are limited because finding available clinical sites with the required census numbers is more difficult for them at the moment than finding qualified faculty.

Since 1105 *is* factored in for applicants who are reapplying, the scores of the re-applicants in the high 40's or low 50's last semester who didn't secure a spot is now bumped up to 56+ (due to the additional 5 reapplication points and the GPA multiplied by a factor of 11 instead of 10 classes). This will probably make it difficult for those of us who are first time applicants since a perfect first time score is 56. I'm happy that the entering classes are filled with committed, top-notch people . . . just hoping that I can be one of them this Fall! If not, there's always Spring 2011! :)

GG

GG - that is seriously depressing! I wish they'd published how many people were in each score for spring (i.e. there were 20 applicants at 50 points, 35 at 49 points, etc.).

sh1121 - I don't feel good about my chances at all. I'm worried that the only first-timers who get in will have perfect 56. My score is 55 (3.9 GPA, 10 classes, and 10 HESI points) and I'm feeling worse and worse about it.

I wonder if in a semester or two, will it be impossible to get in on the first round even with a perfect 56?

I loved our instructor in the hybrid class but I was discouraged when she said that. When I told a nurse I work with about that, she said she was told almost the same exact thing about 5 years ago when she applied and got in on the first try. She told me that they are probably told to tell some students that so they aren't too heartbroken if they don't get in I guess.

I am going to like this class a lot more than the CNA class. It seems to be geared more towards acute care, which is awesome! I felt bad for some students in our class though because they were only sent the petition to register for the class at 10 am yesterday morning and our class started at 1230pm! Crazy!

Purkinje - I think 55 is a *very* competitive score. I would be surprised if you don't secure a spot. ;)

Our instructors comment may indeed be merely intended to encourage applicants to not get their hopes set so high that they are greatly discouraged if a spot isn't offered to them for Fall 2010. I just wish that the leap in application score created with the additional 5 points was not just handed to re-applicants each application round. If the reapplication points offered were a bit more modest I think it would encourage those who earned lower classroom grades and wanted to strengthen their application to retake classes and raise their grades while undoubtedly increasing comprehension of the material. In the long run, I believe that would make it a win-win for everyone! The nursing department may be seeing higher scores than they have seen in the past which means this may be a completely new situation for them. Anyone know if the scores have ever been as high as they were in the Spring 2010 application cycle?

GG

GG - thanks for the encouragement. I feel like I'm competitive among first-timers, but when you put the reapps in, I'm left in the dust!

I totally agree with you about the reapp points, since the 11th class thing throws so much weight into the scores. As it is now, a reapp with a 3.2 GPA (9 Bs, 2 As) could beat out a perfect 56 first-time app. You're so right that if the reapp points were more modest people would be encouraged to study and improve to get in, instead of just having to wait. I'd also suggest they allow one retake on the HESI with the second application, for people who maybe had a bad day...

GG- Not what I wanted to hear :crying2:!!

Purkinje- 55 is very competitive! I don't think you have anything to worry about

Adamsrtb- i think you were sitting right in front of me
