Austin Community College (ACC) - Fall 2010 Hopefuls

Published

I'm a Fall 2010 applicant at ACC and thought it would be nice for all the Fall 2010 hopefuls to have our own thread to share exciting news, information, and support with each other.

I turned in my application last Friday (Dec. 18th) after taking the HESI exam. I feel good about my scores but I anticipate competition for the Fall spots is going to be quite fierce. After that large applicant pool for Spring I think we will see a lot of re-applicants applying with the 5 extra re-application points. Not sure what that will mean for the ranking scores but it will be interesting to see . . .

Good luck to all the Fall 2010 applicants!

Thanks SST!! I think I will start to look into getting that book.

Do all of the program options (EVC, CEC, and online) use the same list of textbooks or are they chosen by instructor?

Does anyone know what materials we need for 1105??

Fundamentals of Nursing Caring and Clinical Judgement 3rd edition and we have to purchase the paper syllabus at the bookstore. As of last week, they hadn't printed the new semester syllabus yet. The bookstore at Cypress said to check back this week. If you go to the RN website and click on "Course Bulletin Boards" then click on Nursing Skills, it says the details on the textbook when you scroll to the bottom.

thanks radiation!!

Do you think the bookstore at NR will carry it, or no because no nursing classes are offered there?

FYI, you can get the book on Amazon (new or used).

Are you guys going to use your own scopes for class? My friend told me it's easier to learn using your own, although you have to use the school one for checkoffs. I'm looking at the baby pink Littmann Classic II. :)

Where are you guys buying your scopes and blood pressure cuffs from?

I am bringing my own stethoscope to class. I have a Littman Master Classic II which I have used for years and I love it! The doctor I work for recommended it and he told me his got him through medical school and he still uses it. I can't remember where I ordered it from but they did free engraving. I have heard that stethoscopes tend to get stolen in the program!

It is definitely better to learn using a good one but it can work against you when you switch to the cheap school ones. When I was checked off on BP in the CNA course, the instructor let us use our own then she went behind us and she used her own to verify that we were right. I hope they do the same. This will be like the tenth time I have been checked off! ha!

Allheart.com is a good source. I get all my scrubs from there. I can't remember where I got my BP cuff from, but it was only like $10-15. I believe the Eastview and Cypress Creek campuses sell a stethoscope and BP package. Just make sure they are attached. When I took my CNA course at ACC the instructor told us to stay away from the scopes that had the BP cuff attached. Make sure you purchase them separately.

I'm ordering my scope from http://www.MediSave.net. They have free engraving and their customer service is supposed to be great. I actually haven't ordered it yet, because I'm afraid I'll jinx myself and not get in for Fall!

If they accept Spring 2011 apps starting May 15, surely they have to send acceptance letters for Fall before then, right?

I'll be bringing my own scope and cuff to class as well. I bought my stethoscope online through a store that does Littman copies for much, much less but the quality is great. I'm off skiing right now so I can't check the brand name but I found the recommendation on AllNurses. I could hear tones in our CNA class and clinicals that the classroom scopes couldn't pick up. Just do a search on the forums for stethoscope recommendations and you will find a bunch of threads. Like Radiation already mentioned, I've also heard that stethoscopes have a tendency to walk off or get lost in the program so I figured I would start with a high quality, yet lower priced model so I wouldn't be devastated if I lost mine. Engraving or getting a unique color can also help. Definitely get the cuff separate from the stethoscope! Again, I got my cuff from an online seller - very inexpensive yet I've been pleased with the quality.

I'm registered in the hybrid section on Wednesdays with Radiation. Hoping that if I earn a spot in Fall 2010 that I will have the opportunity to do the hybrid track as well.

Radiation or others - Any idea if the 1105 materials (specifically hybrid section) are available only through the Cypress bookstore or can we find them at Eastview or other campuses as well?

:) GG
