Austin Community College (ACC) ADN Fall 2021

Published

Hi there! I know it's pretty early but I thought it would be nice to create a thread for all of us who will be applying for the Fall 2021 cohort, keep each other up to date on upcoming deadlines, and this whole process in general.

Hope y'all are keeping safe and staying sane during these wild times.

Congrats to all who got in! I didn't make it this round but keeping my fingers crossed for this next round. Do y'all know how many (if any at all) first round applicants were accepted? I was at 31.38 this first round; I heard the cut off was 32, but I don't know how true that is.

And for those who applied for Spring 2022 - is there a group for that cohort on here yet?

@CK2020  Hey. I just created group for Spring 2022 cohort if you are still applying! Join us

Now that y’all have had your orientation and are about to start - anyone able to share their schedule so that I have an idea what to expect in January?

M-F we have something.

M 3 hr lecture

T 2-3 hr lab

W 3 hr lecture

Th 3 hours of simulation lab at Highland ACC

F simulation again if its not your week for clinicals

If it IS your week for clinicals then you go 2 days out of the week for about 6 hours.

Hey I was supposed to start but had to defer and now I’m going to be an hour away from all campuses. Are you on campus all 5 days or is some of this online?

Class is online and sometimes lab, but only because of COVID. I’m not sure what the rest of the semester will look like and definitely not next.

Wrong thread oops

I’m starting the program in January and am taking the month to prepare for my first skills check off and dosage calc exam.

for that first mastery check off should I prepare for all of the skills listed in the 36 page document we got in RNSG 1105 or is the test limited to:

- Applying Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

- Applying Elastic Anti-embolism Stockings (TED Hose)

- Vital Signs

- Incentive Spirometer Procedure

- Administering a Low Volume or Retention Enema

Of course it can change from semester to semester, cohort to cohort so please take this as my disclaimer.  My cohort and the one before us did our first check off on Physical Assessment which is very detailed and you'll learn it in Level 1.  We also had to include entry/exit measures so those you should review for sure too (you will always have to do entry/exit measures).  It never hurts to review everything (will help with clinical).  Additionally, my cohort and the one before us presented this checkoff in a video that was reviewed by a professor.  Whether or not your cohort does a video probably depends entirely on where we are in this pandemic come that time.  Right now, they're telling us that all checkoffs will be in person.  It's a fluid situation.  I bought a small D-ring binder and put all 1105 skill sheets in page protectors in this folder.  As skills are added, I add to this notebook and always take this with me to clinical.  Hope this helps!

Here's more to get you started:

APTM 2245 (Think, Apartment 2245)

A = Aortic (right) 2, meaning 2nd intercostal space - S 2 sounds
P = Pulmonic (left) 2 - S 2 sounds
T = Tricuspid (left) 4, 4th/5th intercostal space - S 1 sounds
M = Mitral/Apical (left) 5th intercostal space - S 1 sounds

And then Erb's Point is 3rd intercostal space

Get on line and listen to heart sounds and adventitious lung sounds.  Registered Nurse RN on Youtube is great!

Print slides before lecture (I print 6 per page) and use them to take notes.  Always re-listen to lectures if you can.  Do objectives.  Use book as a resource (especially tables and charts) but don't feel you need to read word for word.

Gotta go study!

Is this the first mastery after classes have already started and you learn this during class or are we expected to go into the program with this knowledge and this is included in the mastery check off that you take the first week your cohort starts? Sorry for the potentially dumb questions, I just want to get off on the right foot!

The first mastery checkoff is stuff you learned in skills.

I'm graduating next week so my memory is fuzzy but I believe the level 1 check-off is just different isolation precautions and a set of vitals. You need to know what illnesses require which precautions, how to don and doff correctly, how to enter/exit a room, and how to perform vitals.

The professors completely understand that you are nervous and probably rusty. They aren't evil drill sergeants. You get three chances to correct if you mess up. They mostly want to see if you practiced, know what you're doing, and came in prepared.

Y'all are going to be great!

Just as was posted before, our first check off was the physical assessment. It was done via video. The patient was on a type of isolation precaution. We needed to do our entry/exit measures, give vital signs (they could be stated) and then do the assessment. Be sure you know your entry/exit measures and how to put on and take off PPE.
