Aussie wants to go to Wales

Published

Hi All,

Like many Aussie nurses I want to spread my scrubs and head for the UK. But I thought I would try something different, like Wales!

Is there anyone out there who could tell me about nursing in Wales, and how an Aussie should assimilate!?

Ta:)

Hi

I live just out side cardiff, great city plenty to do and see, there are loads of jobs in all areas. Accomindation can be a bit pricy but nothing compared with london. You just need to get your registration sorted out with the NMC and wales awaits.

Cheers Belinda......

Thanks everyone.

Thanks Sue, there are some interesting sites available. And I've learnt something already...wait for it...Noswaith dda!:rotfl:

It means "Very Good"!!!! :)

With all the talk of Wales and it may just bypass my home country England and go a bit more west of the country. :D

There is a show called Location, Location, Location and they show places outside of the "normal" parts of the UK.

I have just finished my LPN school I plan to take those boards in the next few weeks when the paperwork is finished. Then... :uhoh3: I am off to finish an RN program in the quickest way possible to get back to the UK quick. My goal to relocate is 2007 before I hit 40. I just hope I will not be too old to start nursing in a new country.

Wales seems like such a nice place, though !

When I lived in the UK I used to visit my Gran in Haverfordwest (South West Wales) every year.

It's a lovely area, if I had not been granted approval to live in Australia then I would probably moved there.

Good Luck with your move, I hope it's everything you dream it to be

:) Remember to take a brolly, it's not luscious and green for no reason :chuckle

G'day All,

Sounds really interesting. Does anyone know how different Australian and UK Perioperative nursing is (scrub/scout) and if there are any particularly good places in Wales to look for theatre work?

Can I add a question? Well, I guess if that counts as a question I will be adding two... Anyways, are there many training opportunities in Wales? I was thinking of moving to the UK but wanted to start in a new specialty area (maybe OR, maybe midwifery, I dunno).

G'day Ferret

Is a bit different over here. They have the operating department practitioner role which I never saw in Aust. Apparently two year diploma studying scrub, recovery, and anaesthetics. I have only seen them do anaesthetics however. Best not to get me started on how I feel about these ODPs taking the nurse role away! Particularly when I have had the ODP call me in to do basic patient care instead of doing it himself. Apparently they don't "do" that kind of thing.

The theatre assistant does more as a scout then in Aust. Will open and check trays, and even do count with the scrub. Can't say I like that either.

But their standards are very high, and they all work well together and pitch in as needed.

When all is said and done, Can't wait to get back home:chuckle

Ahhh,

whether you call them ODP's, TA's, technicians, the non-regulated and non-nursing personnell wolves nip at our heels worldwide. Fight them!

I'm Welsh too, although I haven't nursed there. What I can tell you is that it is a beautiful country and generally cheaper than to live than southern England.
