Hi All,
Like many Aussie nurses I want to spread my scrubs and head for the UK. But I thought I would try something different, like Wales!
Is there anyone out there who could tell me about nursing in Wales, and how an Aussie should assimilate!?
Ta:)

I nurse in North wales. There is absolutely no question that you could find a job...it would probably be harder to shoot fish in a barrel.
I take it from your question that you are a scrub nurse>>?
Wales has the benefit of being more wide open than England and yet all the benefits of England (shopping, sightseeing) are only a half hour away.
If you like country side, nature etc etc then Wales is for you.
any more questions just ask

I also nurse in North Wales...like Littleche says it is a lovely countryside and big shopping Malls/Towns are 1/2 hour to an hour away...of course there are lovely towns here to shop too but if you like the big Malls you have to shop in Chester or Manchester.
Nursing is pretty much the same here as it is in the UK but you have to be aware in some parts of Wales Welsh is still considered the first Language...if you decide on Wales it would be an advantage to learn a little of the language to get you by :) Where I am the welsh language isnt as strong here as it is further West - so I can get away with just a little knowledge of the language but if I drive 1/2 hour west then I wouldnt
Thanks Littleche and Sue, I appreciate your replies.
We hope to go to South Wales, and have just about got our jobs sorted. I was wondering about the language Sue, it all looks so hard to say to me:rotfl: How would you say "Do you have any allergies?" in Welsh?
I was also wondering about the shifts over there, do you have the full range of shifts? Someone told me that 12 hour shifts are popular there.

LOl I dont know how to say that in welsh!! (maybe someone else could help me out!!!)
The shifts depends on the hospital where you want to work - I work in a Nursing Home and I quite often do 12 hour shifts but that is my choice (and I am the manager too and do the rota!!!) The hospitals round my area for example do 7:30am - 2:30pm/4pm, or 12:30pm-9:15pm. Each have their own shifts...so I cant comment on South Wales.

Found some web-sites for you to learn welsh...dont know what these sites are like - but have a look and see what you think!!! :)

Hi
I live just out side cardiff, great city plenty to do and see, there are loads of jobs in all areas. Accomindation can be a bit pricy but nothing compared with london. You just need to get your registration sorted out with the NMC and wales awaits.
Cheers Belinda......
