atlanta new grad jobs!

Published

Are there plentiful jobs available for new grads in atlanta? Or will I have to look hard for a job? I'm moving from philaelphia.

Specializes in Rehab, Geriatrics & School Nurse.

IS the job in JAsper for an LPN or Rn?

I guess what is so frustrating is that we keep hearing about the "nursing shortage"....looks like this is no longer the case????

I am frustrated also about another issue...I will be a new RN grad as of December 2007. I realize that the school is not responsible for finding me a job but I would have really appreciated some info about how we will go about getting in the door at hospitals. I am having to search hospital sites and this site ( thank goodness for it) for info about how to get a job when I gradutate. It appears to me that either you need to start doing an extern first while you are in school or apply for an intern position to get into once you do graduate. BUT to get an intern position, you better be applying now before you graduate.

I guess I am getting scared about the nursing-Atlanta market scene. Crazy this is an issue with soooo many hospitals. And I am willing to work at places where there is alot of traffic- I dont care at this point.

If I have any of this wrong-someone please correct me. I am applying for externs and interns right now, as I said I will graduate in December. Am I doing this the right way??? Thanks :)

I just graduated with my BSN and am starting the MSN program at Emory and I want to work, but I can work part time at most and would prefer a PRN position and Im finding it VERY VERY VERY difficult to find somewhere that will hire me....help =(

Specializes in Did the job hop, now in MS. Not Bad!!!!!.

As far as I know there is still a noticeable shortage. The only problem you might run into with your first job is finding a dept. that hasn't already taken on their maximum number of new grads. I know that my previous dept. has run into this issue. However, it's not a very desirable area... pulmonary. Some people seem to dislike sputum or don't want to work with vents or trachs.

Without any experience you'll probably have difficulty finding a prn position. That's because it costs a dept. money to train a new grad. If you're only going to work a couple of days here and there you aren't a good investment.

Have you looked at ER jobs? Places like AMC & Grady might be willing to use you since they're often short staffed. Can you work weekend option somewhere? Emory has a very nice WEO pay scale, and hire new grads.

Which MSN program are you in? I almost applied to Emory, but the cost drove me away. ;)

I applied to the WHNP/ANP dual track...I just want a job but I dont think Im going to find my ideal

You should find out what hospital "partners" with Emory's nursing school. Once you begin at Emory you should be able to get priority over the available PRN nursing positions since you are an Emory student. I know my nursing school has a partnership with Piedmont Hospital. As students, we are able to get PRN tech jobs with Piedmont prior to graduation and the RN-BSN track nurses are able to work at Piedmont in a nursing capacity as well. The Piedmont Hospital system is wonderful. You should contact the HR dept. and see if they can help you.

Yes, you should be applying now for intern/extern/residency programs for new grads upon your graduation in December. Check out the website for Piedmont Hospital. They have a pretty competitive residency program for new grads, but I think you will find that their program is very extensive and will set a good foundation for your nursing career. Unfortunately, so many new people are moving to ATL the market cannot keep up and becomes saturated with new grads. Ask your nursing school about any "partnerships" they may have with area hospitals. These partnerships give you an opportunity to get your foot in the door.

The problem is that the shortage is happening at places like nursing homes and hospices. Not many new grads want to start out at places like that whereas adult and pediatric hospitals arent seeing the shortage as much.

I think "MT3133" in posts numbered 21 & 22 said some very important info.... Check out who your school has a "partnership" with.

It seems like that is the key to get into the internship programs! I guess that makes sense but when your school does not lay it out like that you end up doing a lot of leg work on your own to only come back to that conclusion or have someone say it!!! :)

My school does not partner with Piedmont but I went ahead and applied to their internship program to see if I had any chance. A few people on this site seem to really rec them. I have some really good references..maybe that would help. Otherwise I think I am settled on Emory after grad in December....who my school...PARTNERS...with :)

I really appreciate everyone for their input on this job situation, it has been so helpful!
