Are there plentiful jobs available for new grads in atlanta? Or will I have to look hard for a job? I'm moving from philaelphia.
Did you conduct interviews over the phone or in person? Did you have healthcare experience??
I had one phone interview for a hospital and then flew down for a 2nd interview with them. The other interviews were all in person (had to fly down each time!).
The only experience I had before being an RN is working as a tech and an extern while in nursing school.
Good luck!

Hippy, did the hospitals/recruiter pay you to fly down, or was this out of pocket?
No, I payed for the flights myself. However, the hospital that I was hired at (Northside) is giving relocation reimbursement.
Oh ok, so it's like hang on to your receipts and we'll reimburse you? Do they put a cap on the amt?
Good luck at Northside. I just checked their website a couple nights ago, and there was nothing for new grads. I couldn't believe it!
Just remember that all of the available jobs are not listed on hospital websites. Your best bet is to always go to the hospital, ready to interview, and apply in person. Web apps don't necessarily get the attention they require.
Thanks Finch! That's a good point. I'll keep that in mind. I'm still hoping tomorrow will bring some positive responses from my back to back interviews last Friday.
Chloe,
I love it at Northside so far! Everyone is so great and the nurses are so helpful.
That's strange. I haven't looked at the website since I was applying several months ago but I know that they were interviewing for Mother-Baby Internships the other day because our manager was bringing applicants by the floor to show them around. If you're interested in Women's Health at all, Northside is the place to be. If you PM me, I can give you the contact info for the recruiter that hired me.

Hey Hip,
thanks but I sped up my interviewing process and things got kicked into overdrive last week. Interviews were coming out of the woodwork (altho NONE in Women's Health) and so I found myself interviewing in jobs that would broaden my skills and experience for future traveling and home health care. I interviewed and was accepted onto an Oncology unit at NE Georgia Med Ctr. I fill out new hire paperwork on Monday and will start 2 weeks after. They don't wait to hire only 2x a year like some hospital systems. They hire all the time and have new grad orientation every other week!!!
The commute will be much easier for me. I have lived here long enough to figure out that driving in Atl traffic takes its toll on me mentally as well as physically.
I am sure I'll be able to utilize my women's health skills with my patients. And I hope to attain many many skills. I hope this is the right decision. It seems to be my speed. Of course I'm hearing from quite a few family and friends who think I've sold out by accepting this position and not holding out as they think I won't get a broad learning experience. What do they know that I don't? I've subscribed to the Oncology forum on this site and have learned many fine points.
Thanks for thinking of me Hip. I hope this works out!

I am so happy you found a job!!!!! I know it was nerve wracking to get through school and not being able to find a job(especially with the so called "nursing shortage" they say is going on. Stay there for a year and you wont have that problem again!!! Besides oncology pays Great!!! Good luck and congratulations!!!!

Heya Hopeful,
thanks so much for the terrific praise. I really do need that now. Family and friends being so unaware of the long-lasting damage of the words that they forget they say.
Far as I know, oncology pays the same as all else at this stage of the game. I'm getting the same new grad starting pay plus diffs for metro Atlanta as anyone else. I almost feel like I'm taking advantage of them. I need so much orientation and training! But then I just think about all the years I've struggled through exams, lectures, papers, presentations, clinicals, externship...ok, no more guilt here! LOL.
I completed my paperwork, background and drug screens, pharm test (after just getting out of school and acing NCLEX!!!) and got my badge today. There it is. My name, my pic w/ the RN and the Oncology listed right below it and above the bar code. It's starting to feel real!!
Thanks So Much Mr. RN!!!!!
