At what age did you decide on nursing?

Published

I am still young, 25, but need some stories of encouragment. I have a 2 yo son and am due with my 2nd little one in December. I am registered for fall classes at my local college and will continue to take my pre-req's until I am done. I always kick myself in the butt though for not getting right in after high school graduation and taking my classes seriously; I was definately a slacker and can't afford to be that anymore. I have always wanted to be a nurse and can't imagine myself anywhere else.

So I am curious to know the stories, as I am sure they will be encouraging, at what age did you decide to start taking classes to become an RN? Did you have children? etc.

Thank you.

I am over 35 years of age and I am in nursing school. I have teenagers. They were small kids when I started taking my pre req classes. You have to have motivation and determination. You have to think of you and your kids and how you want your future to be.

It was either my freshman or sophomore year of high school that i decided i like Bio. It was then that i decided that i would become a MD. That lasted for about 3 months which was how long it took me to gather all the info on what i actually took and hot long it takes to be a MD. So i got lazy and didn't do/care much for school after that (luckily i'm fairly smart so i still did well in school even though i partied and didn't study much). So in my junior year i decided to at least have some kind of career. So off i went and started vocational school and my junior year of high school in the same year. Two years later i graduated with both deggrees (HS and EPA certified in HVAC). At first i though i was making decent $$ because of my age. A few years passed and realized i wasn't making squat! i was about 23 and had body pains all over, back, knees, neck, ect. I was like WTH!!! i'm going to die before i every grow up but, kept working the same job anyways. Moved to TX and hit rock bottom. Too hot to work in a attic here, and making only $10 hr. with all those years of experience. So i searched the web for a bit and decided to go back to school and become a RN since i enjoyed bio. Luckily i still do. It took a good while and some work to get into a RN program, 3 tries and 74credit hr later (after i finished my pre-reqs, i went ahead and got all the other courses i need to get a AS in bio since i know i'm going to get a BS in RN anyways, i'm 1 statistic class short of a AS), I will be starting a RN program this coming fall. Although i consider myself to be a smart guy, i have to say that getting into nursing school is really hard. It is soo dang competitive! My GPA has never dipped below 3.7 and it still took me 3 tries. At least i know it will be worth it. I'm 27 now, and i know for a fact that i could not last 20 years doing HVAC. RN, thats a whole different story.

I'll be thirty in July, and I'm probably in a minority in that I'm childless by choice and unmarried.

I've had an unorthodox time since leaving university -- one major career switch already before this, and several years spent working in foreign countries on either side of the Pacific. Now people ask me "You're thirty and starting all over again?!"

Well no, I'm not "starting over". To me, direction in life is like a braid that keeps getting thicker with each strand added. Sometimes a strand or two are let go as I outgrow them or simply realize they don't belong. My example: I started out working during university (round one) in translation -- I loved language. When it hit me that I felt the desire to see the world, I took travel and braided it in, leaving the country to work for an English language magazine overseas. After that contract I did a year of AmeriCorps and I found that I loved adult education! So took that, braided that in and became a consultant doing cross-cultural training.

Eventually, though, I figured out something was still missing. I was getting the travel and I liked working with people, but I still didn't quite feel right. Especially with all the travel, I'd seen a lot of areas - inside and outside the US - that knocked sense into me when it came to how little access so many people have to basic, basic care. Came to the conclusion I was missing the feeling that I was really helping another human being. So, after looking at all my options I've decided to take that strand too, and add it to the braid as best I can. I really hope that I can bring a love of travel, adult education (I'd love to go into preventive health education!), and a (probably naive, but hey) desire to do something for people.

I'll no doubt discover more strands to add, and probably some that end up dropped along the way. Nobody can do everything. But if I get to 90 years old and I'm still finding more things that shape me, I'll be happier than anything.

Good luck with nursing!

I wanted to be a nurse since my freshman year of highschool. I am 22 yrs old and just got accepted into BSN program this Fall ('10). I have two children, a boy 2 yrs and a newborn daughter. Don't doubt yourself and work hard in order to accomplish your dreams.

I decided I wanted to be a nurse when I was 18/19. But then I got married, had a son when I was 20. Fell into a GREAT job with GREAT pay. So walking away from it was not an option. Moved out of state with my family, my hubby has a great job where I can stay home with the kids, but they are at school all day, and I was bored! So at 27 decided I wanted to get my degree, finally, so I started very part time at the local community college in my new town.

I will be almost 31 when I start the program (this fall). So for me, this has been something I've wanted to do for the past 12 years. With my children being older now, and me not having to work, this is the perfect opportunity to start what I've always set out to do!! :)

Specializes in RN, BSN, CHDN.

I was 12 when I decided to be a nurse, I took all the subjects in school that I needed to obtain this desire so I would be ready to train as soon as I was old enough. In the UK you can start training at 18 but it was a further 9 years before I started due to family circumstances.

Hey there! I am 28 years old, and just decided in the fall that this is what I really want to do with myself. I had always tossed around the idea of being a nurse, or something in the medical field.

Like you, I never acted upon it before. I knew it wasn't going to be easy, and being younger that kind of scared me. Soooo, I ended up getting a degree in another field, criminal justice. I worked in my field for abt a year as a caseworker for children.

What happenned next? I had my own baby, unexpected, but my best gift ever!! That was two years ago, and I have been a stay at home momma since. This has given me time to reflect on myself, and I decided that I want to be a nurse.

I feel as though now, since I am older, I am more mature. I will be able to handle the stress better and buckle down more. I will be starting my nursing program in the fall.

The other day I went to my schools orientation, and to tell you the truth, there were more people there that were our age or older than younger.

I am so excited to be doing this for myself and my daughter. It is never too late to follow your dreams. You can do it! Just remember it will only be a few years of your life that you will put into school, and you will be a nurse forever! Noone will ever be able to take that away from you! What an accomplishment and good example you will be setting for your child! Good luck! :)

I am currently 23 yrs old and wanted to be a nurse since I was in high school, however I didn't think I was capable of doing it and never went with it. I actually got talked out of my dream by an advisor from a University that talked me into going to Business Administration w/ a concentrantion in Healthcare, however I never took it seriously and for "personal reasons" stopped going to school in 2007 right before my second son was born. In 2008 I started working in a hospital and thats when I realized that working in the healthcare field was my passion. I love having a job in where you are dealing with an individuals personal well being and working hard to succeed. I started taking my pre-reqs in Spring 2009 at my local CC, I applied for NS 2010 however I wasn't accepted, I was very dissapointed and brought me down making me doubt myself once again. However I am not going to give up and I will make my dream come true. I regret not making the decision to get into NS right after HS which is why I am encouraging my sister to follow her dream right after hs, she also wants to be a nurse. Hopefully I will get in next Spring if not then fall, who knows! :nurse:

Its been an on-again off-again thing for me since about age 21. I honestly stumbled upon it around age 21, after being interested in emergency medical care and then having someone tell me that nurses make a decent living.

In the 5 yrs it took me to get my BS, I went from pre-BSN to graduating with a degree in community health education, b/c my interests were in public health/community health so I "specialized". Finding work in that field with just the BS and no national certification as a certified health educator was pretty much impossible. The first place we lived (my husband is in the military) used RNs as community health educators. That was years ago, and in the interim I have had 4 kids, now aged 11 down to 2.

I am now considering going back again (I am on the fence), with the end goal of community/public health nursing - whether it be in community health education, school health, or public health.

Decided to go for it on my 47th birthday, about to turn 48 and will be submitting my application in 2 months :yeah:

I was almost 41 when I finally started my pre-reqs. Nursing has been a life long dream of mine since I was a little girl. Various reasons why it didn't work out right after high school. Now seemed for sure to be the right timing for me, and with all the financial aide available, I'd be stupid not to jump at the chance. I have small kids, age 7 and 4, as well as a visiting step and an older child out of the home. I'm not the oldest in my classes. :-)
